Overview
Carcassonne is a breathtaking, double-walled medieval fortress city that looks like something out of a fairy tale. A UNESCO World Heritage site, its history dates back to the Roman Empire, but its most iconic features—the 52 towers and 3-kilometer-long battlements—were largely restored in the 19th century. The city is divided into two parts: the Cité de Carcassonne (the medieval fortress) and the lower, modern city (Bastide Saint-Louis).
A visit to Carcassonne is a journey into the heart of France's past. For cruise passengers, it's a full-day shore excursion from a coastal port or a highlight of a leisurely river cruise on the Canal du Midi. The experience of walking through the citadel's cobblestone streets and imagining the life of knights and noblemen is an unforgettable highlight of any trip to the region.
The most essential activity is to walk along the ramparts and battlements of the medieval fortress. A paid ticket gives you access to a portion of the walls and the inner courtyards of the castle, offering spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the lower city.
Tip: Wear comfortable walking shoes, as the surfaces are uneven and there are many stairs. Go early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the heat and the crowds.
Located within the Cité's inner walls, the Château Comtal (Count's Castle) is the fortified heart of the city. A visit includes access to the inner fortress, a museum, and a walk along the inner ramparts. The castle itself is a marvel of military architecture and a fascinating look into its history.
Tip: Your ticket to the ramparts often includes entry to the castle, so be sure to take advantage of this to explore both at once.
This beautiful basilica, located within the walls of the Cité, is a blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Its beautiful stained-glass windows, some of which are among the oldest in the south of France, cast a colorful light throughout the interior.
Tip: The church is free to enter and offers a peaceful and cool escape from the summer sun.
While most of the attention goes to the citadel, the lower city of Bastide Saint-Louis is worth a visit. It offers a more authentic, modern French experience, with a lively market, local shops, and the beautiful Place Carnot, with its central fountain.
Tip: This area is a great place to find local restaurants that are less touristy and more affordable than those inside the Cité.
The Canal du Midi, a UNESCO World Heritage site itself, runs through the heart of Carcassonne. You can take a boat tour on a barge to experience the canal's historic locks and bridges from the water, or simply stroll or cycle along the shaded towpaths.
Tip: Many river cruise tours will stop in Carcassonne, allowing you to fully explore the city from the nearby port on the canal.
Carcassonne and the surrounding region are famous for cassoulet, a hearty, slow-cooked casserole made with beans, sausage, duck confit, and other meats. Finding a local restaurant that specializes in this dish is a must-do culinary experience.
Tip: Look for a restaurant that has been making cassoulet for generations for the most authentic taste.
