Overview
Cape Horn (Cabo de Hornos in Spanish) is the southernmost headland of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, located on Hornos Island in Chile. It marks the northern boundary of the formidable Drake Passage, where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans dramatically converge. For centuries, this remote and notoriously stormy promontory was considered the ultimate maritime challenge, a fabled passage that instilled both dread and immense pride in sailors who successfully rounded it.
While not a traditional cruise port with extensive shore facilities, Cape Horn is a iconic scenic cruising point for expedition and South America/Antarctica itineraries. Cruise ships navigating these southern waters, particularly those on Ushuaia-to-Punta Arenas routes or Antarctic voyages, often aim to sail past or, weather permitting, offer a limited Zodiac landing on Hornos Island itself. Tip: Be on deck early, ideally on the side facing the cape, for the best views. The ship's captain will usually make an announcement for this momentous occasion.
If conditions allow (which is often less than 50% of the time due to high winds and rough seas), your expedition cruise may offer a Zodiac landing on Hornos Island. Here, you can walk to the Albatross Monument, a memorial to sailors lost at sea, and visit the small lighthouse and Stella Maris Chapel.
Tip: Landing is a privilege and requires sturdy, waterproof gear. Follow your expedition team's instructions precisely for safety.
If you are able to land, pay your respects at the Albatross Monument, a striking sculpture dedicated to the thousands of mariners who perished attempting to round Cape Horn. It is a powerful symbol of the challenges faced by "Cape Horners."

Also on Hornos Island, you can visit the Cape Horn Lighthouse, maintained by a Chilean Navy family, and the tiny Stella Maris Chapel, the southernmost church in the world. You might even be able to get a special Cape Horn passport stamp.
Tip: These small, remote structures offer a unique insight into life at the very edge of the inhabited world.
Even if a landing isn't possible, cruising around Cape Horn offers excellent opportunities for wildlife spotting. Look for black-browed albatrosses gracefully soaring on the winds, various petrels, cormorants, and potentially seals or dolphins in the waters.
Tip: Bring high-power binoculars for close-up views of the abundant seabirds that frequent this windy region.
Cruising past Cape Horn often means you are entering or exiting the Drake Passage, the renowned body of water separating South America from Antarctica. While sometimes rough, the Drake Passage is itself an experience of vast open ocean and can offer incredible wildlife.
Tip: Embrace the motion of the ocean! Some cruises even provide a "Drake Shake" certificate if conditions are particularly lively.
