Tip: The museum is a short walk from the cruise port. Give yourself ample time to fully appreciate these masterpieces.
The waterfront promenade in Reggio Calabria, the Lungomare Falcomatà, is one of Italy's most beautiful. Lined with palm trees, statues, and historic buildings, it offers breathtaking views across the Strait of Messina to Mount Etna in Sicily. It's an ideal place for a leisurely walk.
Tip: On a clear day, the views of Mount Etna are spectacular, especially at sunset.
Just a short trip from Crotone's port, the Aragonese Fortress of Le Castella is a stunning sight. This 15th-century castle is located on a small, picturesque island in the Ionian Sea, connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. It's a fantastic spot for history buffs and photographers alike.
Tip: Wear comfortable shoes as the castle's stone paths can be uneven. The views of the coast from the fortress are a highlight.
A short drive from Crotone, the Capo Colonna Archaeological Park is a key site of ancient Greek history. Here, you'll find the remains of the Temple of Hera Lacinia, with a single, magnificent Doric column still standing against the backdrop of the sea.
Tip: The small archaeological museum on-site provides excellent context for the ruins and artifacts found in the area.
Located near Reggio Calabria, the fishing village of Scilla (part of the Costa Viola, or "Violet Coast") is a place of legend and stunning beauty. According to Homer's Odyssey, it was the home of the sea monster Scylla. Today, it's known for its picturesque marina, the medieval Castello Ruffo, and fantastic seafood restaurants.
Tip: Enjoy a fresh seafood lunch in the Chianalea, a historic fishermen's quarter with houses built right on the water.
Calabrian cuisine is famous for its bold, spicy flavors. Be sure to try 'nduja, a fiery, spreadable pork sausage that is a regional specialty. Other local treats include Tropea red onions, licorice, and fresh seafood.
