Serving as a gateway to Egypt’s bustling capital, Port Said connects travelers to Cairo’s legendary history and culture.

Overview
Cairo, Egypt's dynamic capital on the Nile, is a historical powerhouse. It's renowned for iconic ancient wonders like the Pyramids of Giza, the Great Sphinx, and an unparalleled collection of Egyptian artifacts, offering an immersive journey through millennia of civilization.
For cruise passengers, Cairo is accessed from the Mediterranean port of Port Said. Crucially, Cairo is about 200 kilometers (125 miles) inland, requiring a 3-4 hour bus journey each way. Due to this distance, visiting Cairo from Port Said is almost exclusively done via a full-day, organized shore excursion, providing a unique chance to explore its legendary landmarks.
This is the quintessential Cairo experience. Witness the last surviving wonder of the ancient world: the Great Pyramids of Giza (Cheops, Chephren, and Mycerinus). Stand in awe before the majestic Great Sphinx, guarding these monumental tombs. You'll have opportunities for photos, and perhaps even a camel ride (optional, usually extra cost).
Tip: Wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared for sand and sun exposure. Bring water, sunscreen, and a hat. Listen to your guide for the best photo spots.
Visit the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square (or potentially the new Grand Egyptian Museum - GEM near the Giza Pyramids, depending on your tour and its full opening status). The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir houses an unparalleled collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts, including the golden treasures from the tomb of Tutankhamun. The GEM, when fully open, will become the largest archaeological museum in the world.
Tip: Photography rules may vary, especially for Tutankhamun's treasures. Your guide will highlight the most important exhibits given the limited time.
Experience the vibrant atmosphere of Khan el-Khalili, Cairo's historic souk (market) dating back to the 14th century. Wander through its labyrinthine alleys filled with shops selling spices, perfumes, jewelry, traditional crafts, leather goods, and souvenirs. Practice your bargaining skills!
Tip: Be prepared for a bustling, sensory experience. If you plan to buy, remember that bargaining is expected. Watch your belongings in crowded areas.
Ascend to the Salah El Din Citadel, a medieval Islamic fortification offering commanding views over Cairo. Within the Citadel, admire the magnificent Mosque of Mohamed Ali (Alabaster Mosque), a grand Ottoman-style mosque with impressive domes, minarets, and intricate interior decoration.
Tip: Dress respectfully (shoulders and knees covered) for mosque visits. Women may be required to cover their heads; scarves are often provided or can be borrowed. Remove shoes before entering.
Some comprehensive tours may include a stop at Saqqara, home to the Step Pyramid of Djoser, considered the world's oldest stone building. Nearby, explore Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt, now an open-air museum featuring a colossal statue of Ramses II and the Alabaster Sphinx.
Tip: These sites offer a deeper dive into early dynastic Egyptian history before the Giza pyramids.
If time permits and your tour includes it, a relaxing felucca ride (traditional wooden sailboat) on the Nile River offers a tranquil escape from the city's hustle. It's a pleasant way to see Cairo from a different perspective and enjoy the gentle breeze.
Tip: This is usually a brief, optional add-on to a very packed day. Confirm if your specific excursion includes it.
