Overview
Cadiz is a spectacular port city in the Andalusia region of Spain, located on a narrow strip of land that juts out into the Atlantic Ocean. Known as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Western Europe, it boasts a rich history dating back over 3,000 years, originally settled by the Phoenicians. Its strategic location made it a crucial hub during the Age of Exploration, serving as the homeport for the Spanish treasure fleet and the starting point for Columbus's third and fourth voyages.
The modern city is naturally divided into the older, walled Old Town (Casco Antiguo) and the modern commercial area. The Old Town is famous for its labyrinth of narrow streets, beautiful plazas, and sun-drenched coastal defenses, all surrounded by the shimmering blue sea. Cadiz offers a wonderful blend of stunning baroque architecture, delicious Spanish tapas culture, and a relaxed, seaside atmosphere, making it an essential stop on any cruise.
This is the highest watchtower in the Old Town, offering spectacular panoramic views. It also houses the Camera Obscura, a unique optical device that projects live, moving images of the city onto a concave screen.
Tip: Book your Camera Obscura time slot immediately upon arrival, as spaces can fill up quickly.
With its striking golden dome and mix of Baroque and Neoclassical styles, the "New Cathedral" dominates the skyline. Visitors can tour the chapels and crypt before climbing the bell tower for closer views of the dome.
Tip: The cathedral complex is a cool escape from the midday sun, but be sure to dress respectfully.
This beautiful botanical garden is located right on the water's edge, featuring exotic plants, sculpted trees, and even a unique fountain shaped like a group of dinosaur-like creatures.
Tip: This is an excellent place to relax and enjoy the sea breeze after a busy morning of sightseeing.
Walk along the ancient sea walls to reach La Caleta, the city’s smallest and most beloved beach, framed by two historic castles, San Sebastián and Santa Catalina.
Tip: Grab a refreshing drink at one of the small beachside kiosks while watching the local fishermen.
The Mercado Central is a vibrant hub of activity where locals shop for fish, meat, and produce. The prepared food stalls around the perimeter offer some of the best and most affordable traditional Spanish tapas.
Tip: Try the local seafood specialties like "tortillitas de camarones" (shrimp fritters) for a truly authentic bite.
One of the largest and oldest Roman theatres in Spain, this historical site was only rediscovered in 1980. You can explore the ruins and the small visitor center built into the fabric of the modern city.
Tip: Admission is often free, making it a quick and fascinating stop if you are already near the Old Town center.
