Overview
Busselton is a vibrant coastal city located in Western Australia's beautiful South West region, approximately 220 kilometers (137 miles) south of Perth. It's nestled on the calm, protected shores of Geographe Bay, renowned for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and long stretches of white sandy beaches. Busselton is most famous for its iconic, heritage-listed Busselton Jetty, the longest timber-piled jetty in the Southern Hemisphere, which stretches an impressive 1.8 kilometers (1.1 miles) out into the bay. The city serves as a gateway to the acclaimed Margaret River Wine Region and offers a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.
Busselton is a growing cruise port of call for various international and domestic itineraries exploring the Australian coastline. Cruise ships typically anchor in Geographe Bay and passengers are tendered directly to the Busselton Jetty. This unique disembarkation offers immediate access to the jetty's attractions and the bustling Busselton Foreshore. A visit to Busselton offers cruise passengers a chance to experience Western Australia's laid-back coastal charm, explore a unique historical landmark, and easily access one of Australia's premier food and wine regions. It's an ideal stop for those seeking natural beauty, outdoor activities, and gourmet delights.
The star attraction is the Busselton Jetty. You can walk its entire 1.8-kilometer length, or take the charming Jetty Train to the end. At the very end, descend 8 meters (26 feet) into the Underwater Observatory, one of only six in the world, to view an amazing "forest" of colorful corals, sponges, and marine life thriving on the jetty piles.
Tip: Allow ample time for the jetty experience (walking or train ride, plus observatory). Book the train and observatory tickets in advance if possible, especially for the observatory, as slots can fill up.
The Busselton Foreshore area, directly adjacent to the jetty, is a beautifully developed space with wide paved paths, playgrounds, picnic areas, and numerous cafes and restaurants. It's perfect for a leisurely stroll, swimming in the calm bay waters, or enjoying a meal with ocean views.
Tip: Shelter Brewing Co. is a popular spot right on the foreshore, offering local brews and good food.
Busselton is the northern gateway to the world-renowned Margaret River Wine Region. Many cruise excursions will offer tours to local wineries for tastings of award-winning wines (especially Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blends), gourmet food experiences, and visits to boutique breweries.
Tip: This is often a popular organized shore excursion, as it requires transportation. If exploring independently, consider booking a local tour or taxi.
The Margaret River region is also famous for its magnificent limestone caves. Excursions might be available to Ngilgi Cave, a stunning show cave with intricate stalactites, stalagmites, and crystal formations, steeped in Aboriginal mythology.
Tip: Cave tours typically involve some walking and stairs. Check the activity level of any organized tour.
At the northern tip of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, a short drive from Busselton, stands the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse. Climb to the top for spectacular panoramic views of Geographe Bay, the Indian Ocean, and the rugged coastline. The surrounding area also offers walking trails.
Tip: Often combined with a cave visit on organized excursions. The climb is relatively easy (59 steps) for a lighthouse.
During the annual migration season (typically June to early December), Busselton is an excellent spot for whale watching. Humpback whales, Southern Right whales, and occasionally other species can be spotted in Geographe Bay as they migrate to and from warmer waters.
Tip: Book a dedicated whale watching tour from the jetty or nearby Dunsborough for the best chances of sightings. This is a seasonal activity.
