Overview
Bursa, often called "Yeşil Bursa" or the "Green City" due to its lush parks and surrounding forests, is a major inland city and a destination of immense historical and cultural significance. It served as the first capital of the Ottoman Empire and is a UNESCO World Heritage site, home to magnificent mosques, mausoleums, and bazaars from that era. Explore the Green Complex, which includes the beautiful Green Mosque (Yeşil Cami) and the Green Mausoleum (Yeşil Türbe). The mausoleum, with its stunning exterior of green and turquoise tiles, is the resting place of Sultan Mehmed I and is one of the most photographed buildings in the city.
Tip: The intricate tile work and decorations on both the mosque and the mausoleum are a testament to early Ottoman artistry.
Many excursions to Bursa include a thrilling ride on the Uludağ Teleferik, the longest cable car in Turkey. The journey up the slopes of Mount Uludağ (ancient Mount Olympus) offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city below and the surrounding forests.
Tip: The mountain is a popular ski destination in winter, but in other seasons, it's a great spot for fresh air and stunning views.
As a key stop on the ancient Silk Road, Bursa is famous for its silk. Visit the historic Koza Han (Silk Bazaar), a 15th-century courtyard where merchants have sold silk for centuries. The surrounding Covered Bazaar (Kapalı Çarşı) is a labyrinth of stalls where you can find textiles, spices, and local handicrafts
Tip: This is the perfect place to practice your bargaining skills and find unique, high-quality silk scarves and other souvenirs
Bursa is the birthplace of the famous İskender kebab. This dish consists of thinly sliced lamb or beef on a bed of pita bread, topped with tomato sauce, hot butter, and yogurt. It's an unforgettable culinary experience that you simply can't leave Bursa without trying.
Tip: Ask your local guide to recommend a restaurant that serves the traditional, authentic version of this iconic dish.
Often included in tours, the village of Cumalıkızık is a remarkably well-preserved early Ottoman village at the foot of Mount Uludağ. Its narrow, cobbled streets and colorful, half-timbered houses make it a living museum and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Tip: The village is still inhabited, so be respectful of the local residents as you explore its charming alleys.
