Overview

In the charming walled city of Beaune, the Hospices de Beaune is an absolute must-see. This former almshouse is a masterpiece of flamboyant Gothic architecture, famous for its beautifully colored, patterned tile roofs. Inside, you can see the opulent "Hall of the Poor" and the stunning altarpiece of "The Last Judgment" by Rogier van der Weyden.
Tip: Visit the adjacent Wine Museum to learn about the Hospices' long tradition of wine production and its famous annual charity auction.
Many river cruises provide bicycles for guests, allowing you to cycle along the scenic towpaths that run alongside the rivers and canals. This is a perfect way to get up close to the beautiful countryside and pass by the iconic locks that are a hallmark of French waterway travel.
Tip: The pace of river cruising is slow, so you can often disembark and cycle for a while before meeting your ship at the next lock.
Located on the banks of the Saône River, Chalon-sur-Saône is a beautiful medieval city with a rich history. As the birthplace of photography, it holds a special place in history. Tip: If you have time, visit the Nicéphore Niépce Museum, dedicated to the inventor of photography.
Often a stop on excursions, Noyers-sur-Serein is a perfectly preserved medieval village that looks like something out of a fairy tale. Its half-timbered houses and cobbled streets make it a joy to explore. It is officially listed as one of France's "Most Beautiful Villages."
Tip: Be sure to visit the Saturday market if you are there on the right day, as it is a lively and authentic local experience.
