Burano is a brightly colored Venetian island full of charm and tradition.

4.9/5 ⭐Google 600+ Reviews | A+ Better Business Bureau

Overview
Burano is an incredibly picturesque island located in the Venetian Lagoon, Italy, famous worldwide for its vibrantly painted houses and its centuries-old tradition of intricate lace-making. This charming fishing village offers a distinct contrast to the grandeur of Venice, providing a more intimate and authentic glimpse into the daily life of the lagoon. Its dazzling array of bright colors, reflected in the surrounding canals, makes it a highly photogenic and unique destination.
Burano is not a direct cruise port of call for ocean or large river cruise ships. Instead, it is a quintessential and highly popular shore excursion destination from Venice (Venezia), which serves as a major embarkation/disembarkation port for Mediterranean and Adriatic ocean cruises, as well as a turnaround point for several Italian river cruise itineraries. Access to Burano from Venice is typically via Vaporetto (public water bus) or organized tour boats. A visit to Burano offers cruise passengers a delightful escape from the crowds of central Venice, a chance to explore a charming and unique island community, and the opportunity to witness traditional craftsmanship. It's an ideal stop for those seeking vibrant photo opportunities, authentic local culture, and beautiful artisan products.
The primary attraction of Burano is simply its kaleidoscope of brightly painted houses. Each house is painted in a distinct, vivid color, traditionally used by fishermen to identify their homes from the foggy lagoon. Spend time strolling along the canals and narrow streets, soaking in the unique visual spectacle and taking countless photographs.
Tip: Explore beyond the main street for quieter lanes and even more vibrant house combinations. Bring your camera!
Burano has been famous for its exquisite lace-making since the 16th century. Visit the Museo del Merletto (Lace Museum) to learn about the intricate history and techniques of this delicate art form. You might also see elderly women still practicing the craft in their doorways or shops.
Tip: Be aware that much of the "lace" sold in tourist shops is imported. Look for certified "Burano lace" for authentic, handcrafted pieces, though they will be significantly more expensive.
Just like Pisa, Burano has its own leaning bell tower belonging to the Church of San Martino. Due to subsidence over centuries, the campanile leans noticeably, adding another quirky charm to the island's skyline.
Tip: It's easily spotted from various points around the island; great for a unique photo.
As a traditional fishing village, Burano is an excellent place to savor fresh seafood. Many local restaurants specialize in dishes using the day's catch from the lagoon. Try "Risotto di Go" (risotto with a local goby fish) or other regional Venetian seafood preparations.
Tip: Dine at a trattoria overlooking one of the canals for an authentic experience.
Walk across the wooden bridge to the quieter, greener neighboring island of Mazzorbo. Here, you can find vineyards, orchards, and the renowned Venissa Estate, which produces a unique white wine from the native Dorona grape and features a Michelin-starred restaurant (and a more casual "Osteria").
Tip: A lovely escape for a peaceful stroll or a more upscale dining experience if your time allows.
A common and highly recommended excursion is a "three-island tour" combining Burano with Murano (famous for glass-blowing) and Torcello (Venice's oldest settlement, with a stunning Byzantine mosaic in its cathedral). These islands are easily accessible via Vaporetto.
Tip: If planning to visit all three, start early in the day. Check Vaporetto schedules to optimize your time.
