Overview
Brač (pronounced "Bratch") is the largest and arguably most famous of the central Dalmatian islands in Croatia. Known for its world-famous white stone, which was used to build everything from Diocletian's Palace in Split to parts of the White House in Washington, D.C., the island offers a mix of stunning beaches, historic villages, and rugged natural beauty. The most recognizable sight is Zlatni Rat (the Golden Horn), a uniquely shaped pebble beach that changes its form with the winds and sea currents.
A visit to Brač provides a perfect combination of relaxation and adventure. Whether you're here for a swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic, a hike to the highest peak on any of the Adriatic islands, or a taste of authentic Dalmatian cuisine, Brač delivers a memorable and quintessentially Croatian experience.
No trip to Brač is complete without a visit to Zlatni Rat, the iconic pebble beach in the town of Bol. Its unique "horn" shape, which constantly shifts, is a natural wonder. The beach offers excellent swimming and is a top destination for windsurfers and stand-up paddleboarders due to its reliable winds.
Tip: You can walk from the town of Bol along a shaded seaside promenade to the beach, or take a convenient tourist train.
The charming town of Bol, located on the southern coast, is the main tourist hub and a frequent stop for small cruise ships. Spend time wandering its narrow, winding streets, admiring the traditional stone houses, and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of the harbor. The Dominican Monastery at the end of town offers beautiful views and a rich history.
Tip: Take a moment to enjoy a scoop of local gelato while strolling along the waterfront promenade.
For a spectacular view, embark on a hike to Vidova Gora, the highest peak on any Adriatic island. At 778 meters (2,553 feet) above sea level, the summit offers a breathtaking panoramic vista of Zlatni Rat beach, the town of Bol, and the nearby island of Hvar.
Tip: The hike takes about 90 minutes to two hours from Bol, but you can also reach the summit by car. The views from the top are worth the effort.
Discover the oldest village on the island, Škrip, located inland. This small, historic settlement is home to the Museum of Brač and the Olive Oil Museum. Here you can learn about the island's history, its famous stone, and the ancient tradition of olive oil production.
Tip: A visit to the Olive Oil Museum often includes a tasting of fresh, local olive oil, cheese, and other homemade products.
On the northern side of the island, the town of Pučišća is famous for its stonemasonry school. This is one of the last places in Europe where students still learn traditional stone carving by hand, using the famous Brač stone. Visitors can observe the students at work and admire the impressive stone buildings throughout the town.
Tip: The town is known for its beautiful stone architecture and is a more tranquil alternative to the bustling tourist towns.
For a truly unique experience, visit the Blaca Hermitage, a monastery carved into a cliff face. Founded by Glagolitic monks in the 16th century, this remarkable site offers a glimpse into a self-sufficient monastic life and houses a library and astronomical observatory.
Tip: Accessing the hermitage requires a hike and is a popular guided tour from other parts of the island.
