Overview
Borgarnes is a charming town located on a peninsula in western Iceland, with a stunning backdrop of mountains and the picturesque Borgarfjörður fjord. It is not a cruise port but serves as a key hub for land-based excursions from the nearby cruise port of Reykjavik. Borgarnes is the gateway to some of Iceland's most significant historical sites and geological wonders, including a major geothermal area and unique waterfalls.
A visit to Borgarnes offers a peaceful, authentic slice of Icelandic life. The town provides a perfect starting point for exploring the region's dramatic landscapes, which are steeped in the ancient sagas of Viking settlers. From its informative Settlement Center to the serene views of the bay, Borgarnes is an ideal stop for travelers seeking to connect with Iceland's rich heritage and natural beauty far from the bustle of the capital.
Dive into Iceland's rich history at the Settlement Centre. This museum offers two excellent exhibitions: one that details the sagas of the first Viking settlers and another that tells the story of Egill Skallagrímsson, a legendary Viking warrior and poet. It's an engaging and educational way to learn about the country's origins.
Tip: The audio guide is excellent and brings the sagas to life, making the visit highly informative and enjoyable.
Take a short drive inland from Borgarnes to witness the magical Hraunfossar and Barnafossar waterfalls. Hraunfossar is a magnificent series of cascades that seem to emerge directly from the lava field, while the powerful Barnafossar plunges through a narrow ravine. The two are located just a short walk from each other.
Tip: The walking path between the two waterfalls is well-maintained and offers excellent photo opportunities from multiple viewpoints.
The area around Borgarnes is geothermally active. Drive to Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful hot spring, which pumps out a staggering amount of boiling water. While you cannot bathe in it, the sight of the steam and the bubbling water is an impressive display of Iceland's natural power.
Tip: Be sure to stay on the marked paths and observation decks, as the water is dangerously hot.
Take a stroll across the impressive Borgarnes Bridge, which spans the Borgarfjörður fjord. The walk offers fantastic views of the surrounding mountains, the water, and the town itself. It's a great spot for photos and to take in the vastness of the Icelandic landscape.
Tip: The weather on the bridge can be windy, so hold onto your hat!
The town itself is located on a peninsula that provides spectacular views of the fjord and the snow-capped mountains in the distance. Find a quiet spot on the shoreline or at one of the cafes and simply take in the tranquility and beauty of the scenery.
Tip: Early morning or late afternoon light often creates the most dramatic and colorful views of the mountains and water.
Stop at one of the local restaurants or cafes in Borgarnes to try some fresh Icelandic cuisine. Given its coastal location, you can often find fresh fish dishes, and it's a great place to sample some local Icelandic treats.
Tip: Many restaurants offer traditional Icelandic lamb soup, which is the perfect way to warm up on a cooler day.
