Overview
Borgarfjörður is a historically rich and geologically dynamic region located in West Iceland, inland from the coast near the charming town of Borgarnes. This sprawling valley is often referred to as the "Saga Valley" due to its deep ties to medieval Icelandic literature and the home of Snorri Sturluson, one of Iceland’s most important historical figures. The landscape is defined by vast lava fields, powerful geothermal areas, and the magnificent sight of glaciers like Langjökull in the distance, providing a diverse playground for nature lovers and history buffs alike.
The area is easily accessible from the capital region, making it a popular destination for day trips and shore excursions. Its key natural wonders include the striking blue-and-white cascades of the Hraunfossar waterfalls, which pour out directly from beneath a lava field, and Deildartunguhver, recognized as the highest-flow hot spring in Europe. Borgarfjörður offers a unique opportunity to witness the immense power of Iceland's geothermal energy and explore the very locations where the country’s foundational stories were written centuries ago.
See the tremendous volume of boiling water that emerges from the earth here. This spring provides heat for many towns and villages up to 100 kilometers away.
Tip: Stay behind the marked barriers, as the steam is extremely hot and powerful.
These two adjacent waterfalls are stunning: Hraunfossar is a series of gentle cascades flowing from beneath a lava field, while Barnafossar (Children's Waterfall) is a powerful, narrow torrent cutting through a canyon.
Tip: The area has excellent viewing platforms and easily accessible trails between the two falls.
Explore the former home of Snorri Sturluson, the famous 13th-century historian and poet. You can see the remnants of his geothermal pool and visit Snorrastofa, a research center dedicated to medieval studies.
Tip: Look for the small, ancient tunnel connecting Snorri's house to his hot tub—a fascinating piece of history!
Take the easily accessible wooden stairway up this perfectly formed volcanic crater for fantastic 360-degree views of the surrounding Borgarfjörður valley and lava fields.
Tip: The climb is relatively easy, but it can be windy at the top, so bring a light jacket.
Located in nearby Borgarnes, this center features two engaging exhibitions that bring the history of the country's first settlers and the famous Egil's Saga to life through multimedia displays.
Tip: This is a perfect indoor activity if the weather is rainy or very cold.
For an exciting adventure, consider a guided tour to the nearby Langjökull glacier, where operators offer snowmobiling or super-jeep tours into the icy interior.
Tip: These tours usually require several hours, so book them well in advance to fit your cruise schedule.
