Bolzano (known as Bozen in German) is a captivating city where Italian and Austrian cultures blend seamlessly. Wander through Bolzano's picturesque historic old town, with its beautiful squares and medieval arcades (Laubengasse in German, Via dei Portici in Italian). For a breathtaking alpine experience, take the Renon Cable Car from the city center up to the high plateau of Renon. The ride offers stunning panoramic views of Bolzano and the surrounding Dolomites. At the top, you can hike, explore the earth pyramids, or take the small, historic Renon narrow-gauge railway to various villages.
Tip: Wear comfortable shoes and bring a jacket, as the temperature on the plateau can be significantly cooler than in the city.
The Bolzano Cathedral (Duomo di Bolzano) is a stunning example of Gothic architecture. Its ornate, multi-colored tiled roof and towering bell tower are a dominant feature of the city's skyline. Inside, the church is a peaceful sanctuary with beautiful frescoes and intricate stonework.
Tip: The church is located directly on Piazza Walther, so it's easy to visit while you are exploring the main square.
Bolzano's culinary scene is a unique fusion of Italian and Tyrolean traditions. Indulge in local specialties like canederli (bread dumplings), Schlutzkrapfen (half-moon shaped pasta), and the famous local cured ham, speck. The region is also known for its excellent wines, including the local red Lagrein.
