One of Japan’s top hot spring towns, Beppu is famous for its steamy “hells” and soothing onsens.

4.9/5 ⭐Google 600+ Reviews | A+ Better Business Bureau

Overview
Beppu, located in Oita Prefecture on Japan's southern island of Kyushu, is a vibrant and unique city globally renowned for its abundance of natural hot springs (onsen). Boasting the highest volume of hot spring water and the most hot spring sources in Japan, Beppu is a major cruise port of call for many international cruise lines exploring Japan. Its distinctive landscape is characterized by plumes of steam rising from countless vents and bathing facilities, earning it the nickname "City of Steam."
A visit to Beppu offers cruise passengers a truly immersive Japanese experience focused on relaxation, natural wonders, and local culture. From witnessing the spectacular "Hells of Beppu" (Jigoku Meguri) to soaking in therapeutic onsen baths and exploring scenic viewpoints, Beppu provides a captivating blend of geothermal marvels and traditional Japanese charm. The port itself is well-equipped with amenities and convenient transportation options to access the city's unique attractions.
Experience Beppu's most iconic attraction, the "Hells of Beppu" (Jigoku Meguri). These are not for bathing but are spectacular, superheated hot springs, each with unique colors and characteristics, too hot for human touch. Highlights include Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell, with its stunning cobalt blue water), Chinoike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell, a vibrant red pond), and Tatsumaki Jigoku (Spout Hell, a geyser).
Tip: A common and efficient way to see these is via a dedicated "Hell Tour" bus or taxi. There's usually a combined ticket for several of the Hells.
No visit to Beppu is complete without experiencing its therapeutic waters. Head to a traditional onsen bath (public or private options available) or try a unique sand bath at Beppu Beach Sand Bath (reopened July 2025) or Takegawara Onsen, where you are buried in naturally heated volcanic sand.
Tip: Be mindful of onsen etiquette: traditionally, bathing is done naked, and personal hygiene before entering the water is paramount. Some establishments offer private baths or allow swimsuits in certain areas (e.g., Suginoi Hotel's Aqua Garden).
Take the Beppu Ropeway up to the summit of Mount Tsurumi for breathtaking panoramic views. From the top (1,300 meters above sea level), you can admire sweeping vistas of Beppu city, Beppu Bay, and the surrounding mountains of the Kyushu region.
Tip: The ride takes about 10 minutes and offers fantastic photo opportunities. The summit provides walking trails and observation decks.
Wander through the atmospheric Kannawa Onsen district, where plumes of steam rise from every corner, and the air is thick with the scent of sulfur. This historic area is home to several public baths, traditional ryokan (Japanese inns), and restaurants where you can try Jigoku Mushi (hell-steamed dishes cooked using the natural volcanic steam).
Tip: Look for local eateries offering Jigoku Mushi, where you can often choose your own ingredients (vegetables, seafood, meat) to be steamed.
For a unique wildlife encounter, take a short bus or taxi ride to Takasakiyama Monkey Park. This natural habitat is home to over 1,500 wild Japanese macaques that roam freely. Visitors can observe their fascinating social behaviors up close.
Tip: There's usually a short funicular ride up to the main viewing area. Follow the park rules and do not feed or touch the monkeys.
Enjoy a leisurely walk through Beppu Park, a tranquil urban oasis with beautiful cherry blossom trees (in spring), various themed gardens, and walking paths. Alternatively, explore the city center and shopping streets like Ekimae Shopping Street for local crafts, souvenirs, and a taste of everyday Japanese life.
Tip: The city center is reasonably walkable from the port, or easily accessible via the free shuttle to JR Beppu Station.
