Overview
Located where the Amazon River meets the Atlantic, Belem pulses with energy, history, and tropical beauty. Its colorful colonial architecture, tree-shaded plazas, and lively markets reflect a rich blend of Portuguese, Indigenous, and Afro-Brazilian influences. The city’s waterfront, lined with boats and shaded by mango trees, is always buzzing with local life. A must-visit is Ver-o-Peso Market, one of the largest open-air markets in South America, where you can sample exotic fruits, spices, herbs, and Amazonian delicacies. Belem is also known for its bold, flavorful cuisine—think grilled fish, acai served savory style, and fragrant stews infused with rainforest ingredients like jambu and tucupi. With its unique cultural mix, dynamic food scene, and access to the lush surrounding rainforest, Belem offers a true taste of Brazil’s northern soul—authentic, colorful, and full of life.

Kickstart your day with a visit to the iconic Ver-o-Peso Market (Mercado Ver-o-Peso), one of the largest open-air markets in Latin America. This bustling waterfront market is a sensory overload in the best way possible, showcasing the incredible bounty of the Amazon. You'll find everything from exotic fruits, fresh fish, and medicinal herbs to regional handicrafts and potent "love potions." It's a fantastic place to observe local life, try unique flavors, and capture vibrant photographs.
Tip: Arrive in the morning to witness the market at its most lively. Don't be afraid to try samples of fruits or juices offered by vendors.

Just a short walk from Ver-o-Peso Market, you'll find Estação das Docas. This beautifully restored port complex, once a hub for the rubber trade, has been transformed into a vibrant cultural and gastronomic center. It features three warehouses housing a variety of restaurants, bars, craft shops, and a brewery. It’s an ideal spot to relax, enjoy a meal with a view of Guajará Bay, or grab an Amazonian-flavored ice cream from Sorveteria Cairu.
Tip: This is a great place for lunch, offering a safe and pleasant environment to try local dishes. Consider trying a craft beer from the local brewery.

Next, head to Mangal das Garças, a stunning zoobotanical park located in the heart of Belém's Cidade Velha (Old City). This urban oasis is home to a variety of Amazonian birds, including beautiful flamingos and herons (garças, which the park is named after). Stroll through its lush gardens, visit the butterfly house, and climb the observation tower for panoramic views of the city, the Guamá River, and the surrounding mangroves.
Tip: Entry to the park is free, though there is a small fee for certain attractions like the observation tower and butterfly house. Catch the herons' feeding times for an impressive display.

Experience the grandeur of the Basilica Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazareth (Basílica Santuário de Nossa Senhora de Nazaré), one of Belém's most beautiful churches. Built in a neoclassical style, its impressive architecture and ornate interiors are a sight to behold. This basilica is central to the annual Círio de Nazaré, one of Brazil's largest religious festivals.
Tip: Take some time to admire the intricate details inside and outside the basilica.

Step back in time at the Feliz Lusitânia Complex, a cluster of historic buildings located near the waterfront. This area includes the Forte do Presépio (Nativity Fort), which was the first construction in Belém's history, dating back to 1616. Inside the fort, you'll find the Museum of Encounters, which explores the history of Portuguese colonization and indigenous cultures. Nearby, the Casa das Onze Janelas (House of Eleven Windows) is an 18th-century mansion now serving as a modern art museum.
Tip: From the fort, you'll get excellent views of Guajará Bay and the Ver-o-Peso Market area, offering great photo opportunities.

Belém is a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, renowned for its unique blend of Amazonian ingredients, Portuguese influences, and African traditions. Beyond Peking Duck, you must try local specialties.
Tip: Don't hesitate to try unique flavors! Many restaurants in Estação das Docas and near the markets offer authentic local cuisine.
