Where the Clyde River spills into the Pacific past working oyster leases, surf‑washed beaches and headlands grazed by kangaroos.

Overview
Batemans Bay sits where the broad Clyde River meets the Tasman Sea, about four hours' drive south of Sydney on the New South Wales south coast. This is oyster country: the river's lower reaches are quilted with the timber racks of Sydney Rock oyster leases, and the town has built its easygoing identity around them — waterfront cafés shucking the morning's harvest, fishing boats nudging the marina, pelicans working the shallows. Behind the beaches, spotted-gum forest runs right down to the ocean in Murramarang National Park, and the whole bay sits inside the Batemans Marine Park, which protects some 110 kilometres of coastline.
You come ashore by tender to the T-Wharf pontoon on the central foreshore, and the town is immediately, rewardingly walkable — flat paths, a marina lined with cafés, and the river glittering beside you. A port call here is best spent slowly: shuck Sydney Rock oysters metres from the leases that grew them, drift upriver past rainforest gullies on a lunch cruise to the historic village of Nelligen, or stake out a patch of sand at Surf Beach. With eight to ten hours in port, there's also time to push further — kangaroos grazing beside the surf at Pebbly Beach, or gorillas and snow leopards at Mogo Wildlife Park, both an easy drive away.
The river's working leases grow Sydney Rock oysters prized across Australia, and tasting them metres from the water is the essential Batemans Bay experience — shucked fresh at waterfront bars, or paddled to on a guided kayak tour that stops at the racks themselves.
Tip: Book the oyster-tasting kayak tour early in your port call — morning water is calmest and you'll be back in town for lunch.
Fifteen minutes south of the bay, this privately run park is home to more than 250 species — gorillas, giraffes, white lions, zebras and Australia's only breeding pair of snow leopards, many of them rescued or part of breeding programs.
Tip: Keeper talks run through the day — time your visit for the big-cat feeds.
In the national park thirty minutes north, eastern grey kangaroos graze the grass right beside the surf at Pebbly Beach — the famous “surfing kangaroo” beach — backed by spotted gums that grow almost to the waterline along 44 kilometres of coastline.
Tip: Go early morning or late afternoon, when the kangaroos are most active and the light is kindest for photos.
Board a small cruiser for a slow journey upriver through rainforest gullies to Nelligen, a historic village settled in the 1800s, with live commentary on the river's oyster industry, timber history and wildlife.
Tip: Sit on the open upper deck for the best views — and the passing sea eagles.
A short drive north of town, this easy two-kilometre return boardwalk threads through mangroves and saltmarsh in the nature reserve — rich birdlife, fiddler crabs at low tide, and barely another soul on a weekday morning.
Tip: Bring insect repellent and go at low tide, when the crabs and wading birds are out in force.
High on the ridge above the river mouth, this free lookout takes in the whole sweep of the Clyde meeting the Pacific — parrots and kookaburras in the trees, barbecues and picnic tables if you want to linger.
Tip: The last 1.5 kilometres is unsealed road — a taxi or tour transfer handles it more comfortably than walking.
