San Carlos de Bariloche, or simply Bariloche, is a breathtaking city in the Patagonian region of Argentina. Tip: The best views are often found at the highest points. Don't miss the viewpoint at Cerro Campanario, which offers a 360-degree panoramic view that's been named one of the best in the world.
Bariloche is Argentina's chocolate capital. Walk along Calle Mitre (the main street), which is lined with countless chocolate shops and factories. Step inside to watch the chocolate being made and, of course, sample a variety of delicious handmade chocolates, truffles, and other confections.
Tip: Many chocolate shops offer free samples, so don't be shy about trying a few before you decide which delicious bars to take home.
To get a bird's-eye view of the stunning surroundings, take a chairlift or cable car up one of the nearby mountains. The ride up Cerro Campanario is short but provides what many consider to be the most spectacular views in the area. Another option is Cerro Otto, which has a rotating restaurant at the top.
Tip: Check the weather forecast before you go; clear days are best for optimal visibility from the summit.
Experience the immense scale of the region's main lake by taking a boat trip on Nahuel Huapi. Excursions can take you to attractions such as Victoria Island, where you can hike through a serene arrayanes forest or spot local wildlife.
Tip: These boat tours are popular and can sell out, so it's a good idea to book in advance.
Wander through the compact and charming city center of Bariloche. You'll feel as though you've been transported to a mountain town in Switzerland, with its Swiss-style chalets, wooden buildings, and cobblestone streets. The Civic Center square is a great central point to start your exploration.
Tip: Look for the city's famous St. Bernard dogs, often found in the Civic Center, ready for a photo opportunity.
