Overview
Bar, a picturesque coastal city on Montenegro's southern Adriatic coast, serves as an authentic and increasingly popular cruise port. While less crowded than its northern neighbor Kotor, Bar offers a rich blend of history, natural beauty, and a relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere. The Port of Bar is Montenegro's largest and most important seaport, and cruise ships typically dock directly at the pier, providing convenient access to the modern city center and a short drive to its iconic historical sites
A stop in Bar promises a journey through time, from the ancient ruins of Stari Bar (Old Bar) to the vibrant waterfront promenade of the new city. Visitors can explore millennia-old olive trees, discover hidden gems, or venture inland to the vast and stunning Lake Skadar National Park. Bar offers a compelling glimpse into Montenegro's diverse landscapes and enduring heritage, making it an enriching experience for those seeking both cultural immersion and natural splendor.
Journey inland a few kilometers to Stari Bar (Old Bar), a fascinating archaeological site and abandoned fortified town nestled beneath Mount Rumija. Wander through the atmospheric ruins of churches, palaces, and a Turkish bath, offering a tangible connection to its Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman past.
Tip: Wear comfortable shoes for walking on uneven cobblestones. There are small shops and cafes at the entrance for local crafts and refreshments.
See the Old Olive Tree (Stara Maslina), a natural monument believed to be over 2,200 years old, making it one of the oldest olive trees in Europe. It stands as a symbol of peace and longevity in a region famous for its olive groves and olive oil production.
Tip: It's a short taxi ride from the port, often combined with a visit to Stari Bar. There's a small entrance fee.
Enjoy a leisurely walk along Bar's modern waterfront promenade, Šetalište Kralja Nikole, lined with palm trees, cafes, and restaurants. Explore the bustling Bar Marina, home to yachts and fishing boats, offering a pleasant atmosphere and sea views.
Tip: This area is great for a relaxing coffee, a meal, or simply people-watching and enjoying the Mediterranean vibe.
Visit King Nikola's Palace, a beautiful 19th-century former royal residence located directly on the waterfront. Now serving as the city's Homeland Museum, it houses archaeological artifacts, historical exhibits, and period furniture, offering insights into Bar's past.
Tip: The palace is easily accessible from the cruise port, making it a convenient historical stop.
Embark on an excursion to Lake Skadar National Park, the largest lake in Southern Europe (approx. 30-40 minute drive inland). This stunning freshwater lake is a haven for birdwatching (especially pelicans), and you can take boat trips through its lily-pad-covered waters to explore monasteries and traditional fishing villages like Virpazar.
Tip: This is a popular half-day or full-day excursion for nature lovers. Many tours include a boat trip and sometimes local food/wine tasting.
Observe the impressive Bar Aqueduct, a well-preserved 16th-century Ottoman aqueduct that once supplied water to Stari Bar. Featuring 17 grand stone arches, it's a testament to ancient engineering and a striking photographic subject.
Tip: The aqueduct is located near Stari Bar and is usually included in tours to the old town.
