Overview
Baños de Agua Santa, commonly known as Baños, is a vibrant town nestled in a valley at the base of the active Tungurahua volcano in Ecuador's Andes Mountains. As a major inland destination and the country's adventure tourism hub, it is not a cruise port. Instead, Baños is a place of dramatic natural beauty and adrenaline-pumping activities, perfectly blending its stunning landscape with its tranquil thermal hot springs.
A visit to Baños is a sensory feast, surrounded by towering waterfalls, lush cloud forests, and a palpable energy from the volcano that looms in the distance. The town offers a wide array of activities, from soaking in healing waters to thrilling adventures like rafting and canyoning. Its unique position as a gateway to both the Andes and the Amazon basin makes it a truly special place to explore.
The town’s name, which translates to "Baths of Holy Water," comes from its famous hot springs. Relax and rejuvenate in the naturally heated pools, which are fed by minerals from the Tungurahua volcano. The most popular spot is the Termas de la Virgen, located right beside a stunning waterfall.
Tip: Go in the early morning for a less crowded experience, and be prepared for a range of pool temperatures.
For a truly unforgettable experience and an incredible photo opportunity, visit the famous "Swing at the End of the World" at the Casa del Árbol (Treehouse). This simple swing, hanging from a treehouse on a cliff edge, provides breathtaking, unobstructed views of the Tungurahua volcano and the valley below.
Tip: The swing can have a long line during peak times, so plan to arrive early to get your photo.
Take a scenic bike ride, taxi, or bus tour along the "Ruta de las Cascadas" (Route of the Waterfalls), a 17-kilometer route with numerous cascading waterfalls. The most famous is the majestic Pailón del Diablo (Devil's Cauldron), a powerful and loud waterfall that can be viewed from several suspension bridges.
Tip: For a more thrilling view of the Devil's Cauldron, be sure to take the trail that goes behind the waterfall.
Baños is a paradise for adrenaline junkies. Depending on your time and preference, you can go white-water rafting on the Pastaza River, try canyoning (rappelling down waterfalls), or go ziplining across the valleys.
Tip: Use a reputable tour operator for any adventure activities. Many shops in town offer a variety of tours and can provide all necessary gear.
As you walk through town, you'll see people working tirelessly to create melcocha, a local sweet made from sugar cane taffy. The process of pulling the taffy to achieve the right consistency is a performance in itself. Be sure to stop and sample this chewy, delicious treat.
Tip: It's a great local delicacy to try and makes for a unique gift to bring home.
To get a different perspective on the stunning landscapes, ride a tarabita, a simple cable car, across the Pastaza River. This provides fantastic aerial views of the river, waterfalls, and the surrounding cloud forest, often as part of the Route of the Waterfalls.
Tip: This is a fun and easy way to see the scenery without a strenuous hike, and provides a great vantage point for photos.
