Overview
Built across seven hills and straddling the Regnitz River, Bamberg’s old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with half-timbered houses, cobbled streets, and baroque architecture. The stunning Bamberg Cathedral and the postcard-perfect Old Town Hall perched on a bridge are just a few of the city’s unforgettable sights.
Bamberg is also a paradise for beer lovers. The city boasts one of the highest brewery densities in the world, with many still crafting traditional Franconian brews—including its signature rauchbier, a smoky, malty specialty. Whether you are exploring the quaint alleys, relaxing by the canals, or enjoying a beer garden with locals, Bamberg invites you to slow down and soak up its timeless charm.
It’s a place where history isn’t just preserved—it’s lived and loved every day, with a warm welcome and a cold pint never far away.

Wander through the UNESCO World Heritage old town, a maze of cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses, and picturesque canals. The area is often called the “Franconian Rome” because it sits on seven hills, each crowned with historic buildings.
Tip: Start at the riverfront district known as Little Venice for postcard-perfect views of fishermen’s houses along the Regnitz River.

The Bamberg Cathedral is a Romanesque-Gothic masterpiece dating back to the 13th century. Inside, you’ll find the famous Bamberg Horseman statue and the tomb of Emperor Henry II and Empress Cunigunde.
Tip: Climb up to the Domberg (Cathedral Hill) for sweeping views of the city and nearby rose gardens.

The Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) is one of Bamberg’s most iconic landmarks, dramatically perched on an island in the middle of the river. Its colorful frescoes and unique location make it a highlight for photographers.
Tip: Cross the pedestrian bridge for the best angle of the building and the flowing river beneath.

Step into the Neue Residenz, a 17th-century palace with over 40 ornate rooms, tapestries, and ceiling frescoes. The adjoining Rose Garden offers a tranquil escape with panoramic views over Bamberg’s rooftops.
Tip: Visit in the morning when the palace is less crowded, then linger in the garden for a peaceful break.

The Old Court (Alte Hofhaltung) is a historic complex dating back to the 11th century. Today, it houses the city’s history museum, where you can learn about Bamberg’s medieval past. Its courtyard is a beautiful example of Renaissance architecture.
Tip: Check for seasonal exhibitions or cultural events often held in the courtyard.

Perched on a hill, the Michelsberg monastery offers both history and scenic views. Once a Benedictine abbey, it now features gardens and vantage points overlooking Bamberg.
Tip: Bring comfortable shoes—the climb is steep but rewarding with panoramic cityscapes.
