Tip: The square in front of the basilica offers a lovely view over the Spoleto Valley, making it a great photo spot.
Immerse yourself in the heart of Assisi's social life at the Piazza del Comune, the main town square. This ancient Roman forum is framed by historical buildings, including the Roman Temple of Minerva, whose façade is remarkably well-preserved. It’s a perfect spot to relax and people-watch.
Tip: Pop inside the Temple of Minerva, now the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, to see the beautifully restored Roman interior.
Simply get lost in the medieval streets of Assisi. The town’s charming cobblestone lanes are perfect for a leisurely stroll, revealing hidden archways, small shops selling local crafts and products, and picturesque courtyards around every corner.
Tip: Wear comfortable walking shoes, as the streets are steep, uneven, and can be slippery. This is the best way to soak in the town's timeless atmosphere.
Hike or take a short bus ride up to the Rocca Maggiore, a formidable medieval fortress perched on a hill above the town. Although a steep ascent, the reward is an unparalleled panoramic view of Assisi, the Umbrian countryside, and the valley below.
Tip: The views from the top are spectacular, making it worth the effort. It’s an excellent spot for photographers.
Indulge in the delicious local cuisine of Umbria, known for its rich, earthy flavors. Look for restaurants serving regional specialties such as dishes with wild boar, black truffles, or locally produced olive oil and wine.
