Emerald Coast Archipelago, Island Paradise, and Seaside Charm

4.9/5 ⭐Google 600+ Reviews | A+ Better Business Bureau

Overview
Angra dos Reis is a beautiful coastal municipality located on the Costa Verde ("Green Coast") of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, roughly halfway between Rio de Janeiro city and São Paulo. It is renowned for its stunning natural harbor and archipelago, which comprises a staggering 365 islands and around 2,000 beaches. The name, meaning "Creek/Bay of the Kings," was given because it was discovered on Three Kings' Day (Dia de Reis) in 1502.
Angra dos Reis offers a paradise-like setting with calm, emerald-green waters, lush Atlantic rainforest covering the surrounding mountains (Serra do Mar), and a vibrant marine ecosystem. While the mainland port town has historical charm, the true allure lies in the islands, with Ilha Grande being the most famous and popular destination accessible from Angra. It is a haven for yachting, sailing, and all forms of water-based exploration, offering both secluded natural beauty and lively seaside amenities.
Embark on a full-day island hopping boat tour (locally known as passeios de escuna or lancha). The tours typically visit several beautiful islands and beaches, allowing time for swimming and snorkeling. Popular stops include Ilhas Botinas (twin islands with incredibly clear water), Praia da Piedade, and Lagoa Azul (Blue Lagoon).
Tip: Book your tour early at the main port (Cais de Santa Luzia). Choose a smaller lancha (speedboat) for a faster, more personalized experience, or an escuna (large schooner) for a more social, budget-friendly option.
While many tours cover islands, dedicating time to Ilha Grande is essential. Take a ferry or fast boat from Angra to Vila do Abraão (Ilha Grande's main village). Once there, you can explore the island's famous trails and beaches like Lopes Mendes (often considered one of Brazil's best beaches).
Tip: If visiting Ilha Grande, plan at least an overnight stay to truly enjoy its beauty, as a round-trip from Angra takes a significant part of the day.
The clear, calm waters and abundant marine life of the archipelago make it an excellent location for snorkeling and diving. Many island-hopping tours include dedicated stops at spots known for their visibility and fish population.
Tip: Bring your own mask and snorkel if you prefer, though equipment is usually provided on the tours. Look for parrotfish, sea turtles, and colorful corals.
Wander through the historic center of Angra dos Reis near the main port. Visit the beautiful 17th-century Convento do Carmo (Carmelite Convent), the Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Main Church), and the charming old colonial buildings.
Tip: Take a moment at the Praça General Osório for a classic view of the town's seaside history.
The main port, Cais de Santa Luzia, is the central hub for tourism and local activity. See the departure of the boats, and visit the nearby municipal market for fresh seafood and local produce, giving you a taste of local life.
Tip: Try some local Brazilian snacks (salgados) or fresh fruit juices sold by vendors near the port.
Find a good vantage point to watch the sunset over the endless islands of the bay. Locations with elevated views, or simply a spot on one of the western-facing beaches, offer a spectacular view as the sun dips behind the mountainous terrain.
Tip: Restaurants and bars near the waterfront often have terraces that are perfect for enjoying the view with a local drink (like a caipirinha).
