A charming Sardinian town with Catalan roots, Alghero delights with history, seafood, and seaside views.

Overview
Alghero, located on the picturesque northwest coast of Sardinia, Italy, is a truly unique cruise destination. Often affectionately called "Little Barcelona" (Barceloneta) due to its historical ties and enduring Catalan influences, the city boasts a distinct cultural identity that sets it apart from the rest of Italy. Its well-preserved medieval old town, enclosed by imposing fortified sea walls, is a labyrinth of narrow, cobbled streets, ancient palaces, and Gothic churches.
Alghero's charm extends beyond its history to its stunning natural surroundings. It sits on the "Coral Coast" (Riviera del Corallo), named for the abundance of red coral found in its waters, which is still harvested and crafted into exquisite jewelry. With beautiful beaches nearby, the dramatic cliffs of Capo Caccia, and the famous Neptune's Grotto, Alghero offers a captivating blend of cultural exploration, natural beauty, and a delightful Mediterranean atmosphere.
Wander through the enchanting Centro Storico (Old Town), a beautifully preserved medieval core within the ancient defensive walls. Discover its charming cobbled lanes, admire Catalan-Gothic architecture, including the Cattedrale di Santa Maria, and browse the many artisan shops.
Tip: Climb the bell tower of the Cathedral for panoramic views over the old town and the harbor.
Take a leisurely stroll along the ancient Bastioni (sea walls) that encircle the Old Town. These impressive fortifications offer spectacular views of the harbor, the open sea, and the dramatic Capo Caccia cliffs in the distance. The walk is particularly beautiful at sunset.
Tip: Look for the various historic towers along the bastions, such as Torre di San Giacomo and Torre di Sant'Elmo. Many restaurants and cafes are built into the walls, offering scenic dining.
Embark on a boat trip from Alghero's marina to the spectacular Neptune's Grotto (Grotta di Nettuno), a vast marine cave adorned with stunning stalactites, stalagmites, and a large saltwater lake. Alternatively, you can drive to the top of Capo Caccia and descend the "Escala del Cabirol" (Goat's Staircase) – a 654-step cliffside path – to reach the grotto.
Tip: Check sea conditions before committing to the boat trip, as it can be canceled if the sea is rough. The staircase descent is impressive but demanding.
Enjoy the beautiful Sardinian sunshine and clear waters at one of Alghero's nearby beaches. Spiaggia del Lido is within easy reach of the town, while Maria Pia Beach offers soft, white sand and pine forests a short distance north.
Tip: Most beaches offer facilities like sunbed rentals and cafes. The water is generally calm and inviting for swimming.
Delve into Sardinia's ancient history by visiting the Nuraghe Palmavera, a fascinating archaeological site dating back to the Bronze Age. This complex of mysterious stone towers and dwellings provides insight into the unique Nuragic civilization that once thrived on the island.
Tip: The Nuraghe Palmavera is a short taxi or bus ride from Alghero, offering a glimpse into the island's pre-Roman past.
Explore the Museo del Corallo (Coral Museum), housed in a charming Art Nouveau building. Learn about Alghero's traditional coral harvesting and crafting industry, view exquisite coral jewelry, and understand the ecological importance of this precious resource.
Tip: This museum offers a unique insight into a local craft and the historical significance of red coral to Alghero.
