Tip: A boat tour of Ponta da Piedade is highly recommended to see the natural arches and grottos up close from the water level.
Enjoy the convenience and beauty of one of the Algarve's most famous beaches, Praia da Rocha. Located very close to the cruise port in Portimão, this expansive beach offers golden sands, dramatic cliffs, and a lively promenade lined with restaurants and cafes.
Tip: For a more secluded spot, walk along the beach to the far ends, where the rock formations create small, picturesque coves.
Immerse yourself in local life by visiting a traditional market in towns like Portimão or Loule. Sample local specialties like fresh seafood, olives, and regional wines. Don’t miss trying a Cataplana, a delicious seafood stew cooked in a distinctive copper pot.
Tip: The seafood in the Algarve is exceptional. Look for a restaurant that specializes in grilled fish to taste the freshest local catch.
For the active traveler, take on a section of the scenic Seven Hanging Valleys Trail. This coastal path offers some of the most spectacular views in the region, winding along the top of cliffs and passing by stunning beaches and rock formations.
Tip: Wear sturdy footwear and bring plenty of water. You don't have to complete the entire trail to enjoy a beautiful hike with incredible views.
Journey inland to the historic village of Silves, the ancient capital of the Algarve. Dominating the town is its magnificent red sandstone castle, the best-preserved Moorish fortress in the region. Explore the castle and wander through the charming streets of this quiet, historically rich town.
Tip: Visit the Silves Castle early in the day to beat the heat and the crowds. The views from the top are fantastic.
