A UNESCO-listed atoll that few ever get to see, Aldabra is a sanctuary for rare wildlife.

Overview
Aldabra Atoll, an remote and almost untouched natural sanctuary in the Outer Islands of the Seychelles, is a truly extraordinary destination and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As the world's second-largest coral atoll (after Kiritimati), Aldabra is a ring of four large coral islands enclosing a vast, shallow lagoon, all surrounded by a fringing reef. Its extreme isolation, located over 1,100 kilometers (700 miles) southwest of the main island of Mahé, has largely protected it from human impact, allowing its unique ecosystem to flourish in near-pristine condition.
Aldabra is most famous as home to the world's largest population of giant Aldabra tortoises, estimated at over 100,000, which roam freely across the islands. Beyond these magnificent reptiles, the atoll boasts an incredible diversity of endemic flora and fauna, including the last surviving flightless bird of the Indian Ocean (the Aldabra Rail), vast seabird colonies, and a spectacularly rich marine environment with abundant coral reefs and marine life. A visit to Aldabra is exclusively undertaken by expedition cruises, offering a rare privilege to experience one of Earth's most significant and untouched natural laboratories.
The highlight of any visit is an up-close encounter with the giant Aldabra tortoises. These ancient reptiles, the largest tortoise species in the world, can be observed roaming freely across the "tortoise turf" – unique short-grass plains maintained by their grazing.
Tip: Respect their space and do not disturb them. Your expedition guides will provide strict instructions on how to interact safely and responsibly.
Take a thrilling Zodiac cruise through the narrow passes and channels that connect the lagoon to the open ocean. These channels experience strong tidal currents, creating a dynamic environment where you can witness abundant fish, rays, and even sharks. If conditions permit, snorkeling or drift snorkeling here is an unparalleled experience.
Tip: Follow your guide's instructions precisely due to the strong currents. The marine life visibility is often exceptional.
Aldabra is a crucial breeding ground for numerous seabird species. From your Zodiac or designated viewing points, observe huge colonies of frigatebirds (including the world's second-largest colony of Greater Frigatebirds), boobies, tropicbirds, and various terns.
Tip: Bring binoculars to get a closer look at the nesting birds and their fascinating behaviors.
Undertake a guided walk on the raised coral islands, exploring the fascinating, eroded limestone (champignon) formations. This rugged terrain, shaped by millennia of weathering, creates a unique habitat for Aldabra's endemic plants and smaller creatures.
Tip: Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes suitable for uneven and sharp coral surfaces. Sun protection is essential as there's little shade.
Keep an eye out for Aldabra's remarkable endemic bird species. This includes the famous Aldabra Rail, the last surviving flightless bird of the Indian Ocean, as well as the Aldabra Drongo and Aldabra Fody.
Tip: Your onboard naturalists will help you identify these unique species and share insights into their conservation status.
If your visit aligns with the nesting season (typically November to March), you may have the rare opportunity to witness Green Sea Turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs, or see hatchlings making their perilous journey to the sea. Aldabra is one of the most important nesting grounds for green turtles in the Indian Ocean.
Tip: Viewing these events is strictly controlled and done with minimal disturbance to the turtles. Follow your guide's instructions carefully.
