Akita, the capital of Akita Prefecture in Japan's Tohoku region, is a significant port city located on the Sea of Japan coast. Embark on a unique cultural excursion to the Oga Peninsula to learn about the Namahage, legendary demon-like beings from local folklore. Visit the Namahage Museum to see various masks and costumes, and the adjacent Shinzan Folklore Museum to witness a traditional Namahage ritual re-enactment (seasonal or by prior arrangement).
Tip: This is a fascinating cultural experience, but requires a dedicated tour as it's located a drive away on the Oga Peninsula.
Take a relaxing stroll through Senshu Park, located on the former site of Kubota Castle. While the original castle no longer stands, you can explore the remnants of its moats and gates, and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. The park is especially lovely during cherry blossom season in spring and when lotuses bloom in summer.
Tip: The park is a pleasant walk from Akita Station, offering a peaceful escape within the city.
Akita Prefecture is famous for its high-quality rice and excellent sake. Seek out opportunities to sample local sake (Nihonshu) at a sake brewery or shop. Also, indulge in Akita's distinctive local cuisine, such as kiritanpo (grilled rice skewers) and Inaniwa Udon (thin, hand-stretched noodles).
Tip: Look for restaurants serving kiritanpo-nabe, a hot pot dish featuring kiritanpo, Hinai chicken, and local vegetables, especially popular in cooler weather.
Explore the Akita Museum of Art, designed by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando. The museum houses a significant collection of works by Tsuguharu Foujita (Léonard Foujita), including a massive mural depicting Akita's festivals and changing seasons, making it a cultural highlight within the city.
