Within the middle of the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal is the Indian Territory known as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The cruise port of Port Blair in the Andaman Islands is the capital city with strong British roots. Port Blair has plenty of natural beauty, thanks to its forests and mountains, but the city also has a fascinating history. One of the remains of this past is a large 19th century prison built to keep Indian convicts in solitary confinement (most of them political prisoners who participated in the Indian Independence Movement). Sir Arthur Conan Doyle even set the Sherlock Holmes novel The Sign of the Four in the islands. Today, the Andaman Islands are better known for tourism and have several museums dedicated to showcasing indigenous tribes and marine life. If you have time to see only one attraction in Port Blair, make it the Cellular Jail. Also known as Kala Pani (Black Water), this is where the British stashed their prisoners and now stands as a memorial to the political dissidents who fought for independence. Its cheerful-looking entrance is a sharp contrast to the atrocities that took place behind its walls.
To learn more about local sea, visit the Indian Navy's Samudrika Marine Museum. There are plenty of exhibits that highlight the ecosystem of the islands and plant and animal life, and there’s even a small aquarium. Since you're not allowed to keep seashells you find on area beaches, this is also a good place to purchase them legally in the gift shop.
For history of the Andaman Islands tribes, you'll want to explore the Anthropological Museum. Preserved items include an ancient Jarawa chest guard depicting jungle life, boats of different shapes and sizes, old weapons, and much more.
A wonderful place to escape the heat is Corbyn’s Cove. There's a small, palm-tree lined stretch of sand where you can enjoy water sports or just relax. Since it’s one of the only beaches in town, it can get busy.
