Rosas (Roses), Spain Cruise Port

While cruising through the picturesque Gulf of Roses – ranked as one of the most beautiful in the world – you may come to the area known as Costa Brava and the lovely-sounding port of Roses, Spain. Called Rosas in Spanish, this important fishing center is popular with tourists, as well as those interested in religious history; it’s also a gateway to the coastal city of Girona and the Dalí House Museum. With roots that may go back to possibly the 8th century B.C. (as evidenced from Greek and Roman remains), there are plenty of archaeological wonders to explore. The area known as the historic center of Roses not only provides a fantastic view of the sea, but also allows travelers the chance to gaze upon modernist architecture, the Santa Maria Church, and wander through shops and restaurants. Here are some of our favorite experiences for the cruise port of Rosas, Spain:

  • The Citadel of Roses (Ciutadella de Roses) is a set of ruins originally built in ancient times, and whose current form evolved in 1543 as protection from pirates. This is a fascinating and well-preserved site with both indoor exhibits and a tour of the exterior that take you back in time.

  • To spend more time outdoors, walk the Roses Megalithic Routes. Flush with both scenery and culture, they include old tombs, dry stone constructions, terraces, and dolmens. Routes start in either the Mountjoi Valley, the Casa Cremada plain, or near the Rec de la Quarentena stream.

  • There are two parks within several miles of Roses; Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park Catalonia contains Catalonia’s second biggest wetlands, and Cap de Creus Natural Park is for those interested in unique rock formations.

  • There are almost too many beaches to count in and around Roses. To name just a few: If you're looking for a bustling scene with plenty of people, try Salatar Beach, where there are also shops, restaurants, and entertainment; La Punta Beach is centrally located, great for families, and offers plenty of water sports; and Cala Murtra requires a boat to reach, and appeals to those who love wild landscapes.
