Propriano, Corsica Cruise Port
On the lovely French island of Corsica on the Valinco Gulf is the cruise port of Propriano, a commune in Corse-du-Sud (which consists of the southern part of the island). Although occupation of the area dates back to the time of the Greeks, Turks, and Romans, the port in its current form was established in the 19th century. Mostly untouched by development – despite becoming steadily more popular among French and Western European tourists – the town is a delightful mix of traditional architecture and more modern buildings. The area beaches are a huge draw in the summer, thanks to the town's beautiful coastline, mountainous backdrop, and pleasant climate. Propriano is fewer than ten miles from Sartène, a medieval-style village where you can catch some spectacular views from up high and walk the quaint, cobblestone streets. Listed below are a handful of our favorite experiences when cruising to Propriano, Corsica, France:
The prehistoric site of Filitosa is about 12 miles northwest of town. It's considered the most important archaeological find in Corsica, dating at least 8,000 years back. A collection of monuments, relics, and carved menhirs (monoliths) were found here in 1946, featuring detailed anatomy and weapons.
Fans of religious history and architecture should visit the Notre Dame de la Miséricorde Church built in 1864, with its three bells later added in 1881. Located in the center of town, it's lovely both inside and out and provides an excellent view of the sea surrounding area.
The thermal-heated Baths of Caldane are about thirty miles from Propriano and are noted for their healing properties. The spring of sulphurous water reaches a temperature of around 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Not only will your body relax in a bath used since the 4th century A.D., but you may find your nerves unwinding as well.
Walk La Grande Corniche to find the best beaches Propriano has to offer. From the more underused Baracci Beach to the bustling Mancinu, (with multiple places to shop as well) to the long stretch at Plage Casabianca, there's a perfect place for every type of vacationer.
