• For one-of-a-kind gifts (or to keep for yourself!), you'll find local handcrafts in abundance. From wood carvings to woven blankets, all money goes toward keeping the small local economy functioning. It's also a nice treat for the kids when travelers bring them small toys, pens and pencils, and notebooks.
   
• ASnorkeling and diving are popular pastimes, although you may have to go out a little further from the local beaches. There are locals who will take you out in their boats, and to neighboring islands; you'll have to use your own gear, as there's no place to rent any on Kitava.
   
• The beaches here overlook some of the bluest water you may ever see, so basking in the tropical sun is a great way to spend an afternoon. You should be able to purchase a coconut drink by the locals for refreshment when you need to cool down.
   
• There are islanders who act as guides around the island, so you can see what life is like here; you'll see the tidy villages, along with the church and school. It's a nice thing to tip your guide as well, even if he's a volunteer.
