Great Harbor, Peter Island, BVI Cruise Port

Part of the Caribbean, the British Virgin Islands (BVI) are part of a volcanic archipelago made up of four main islands and a group of smaller ones. Like many Caribbean destinations, they’re famous for gorgeous beaches and spectacular diving spots. The busy cruise port of Great Harbor, Peter Island is no exception. While the 17th century found Great Harbour housing a fort and slave pens built by Pieter Adriensen and Joost van Dyk (the latter of which was possibly a pirate), the island lost most of its population after slavery was abolished in 1834. In the 1960s, Norwegian millionaire Peter Smedwig bought most of the island and began to develop it for tourists. Amway fans also know that Peter Island is currently owned by the Van Andel family, whose patriarch was one of the company's co-founders. While much of the area is private (and owned by the Amway corporation), the nearby award-winning Peter Island Resort and Spa includes several restaurants that may have room for additional guests.
This is a fantastic place for snorkeling, if you're mindful of the local fishermen running their nets into the bay every afternoon. Keep an eye on the birds: if you see them feeding close to shore, it's a great time to spot large schools of fish, such as tarpon, barracuda, and baitfish; there are plenty of coral reefs in the area as well.
For divers, there's a chance to check out the remains of the ship Fearless. Considered a fairly calm area in which to dive, the National Parks trust has put out mooring balls so you can find the site; while you're exploring the wreck, you might also run into aquatic life, including various fish, rays, and turtles.
Since the island is largely private, Great Harbour is a serene place to bring some food, kick back on the beach, and relax while you watch the waves.
