Attu Island, Alaska Cruise Port

• Archelogy buffs might want to explore the sites of earlier Aleut settlements found on the island, with the oldest site estimated to be around 2,000 years old.
   
• Bird watching here is considered a dream come true for enthusiasts; rare and unforgettable species have spotted for the first time, such as the Whiskered Auklet and Red-legged Kittiwake. Because of the number of bird species likely to be found on Attu that are not seen anywhere else on the continent, author John Fitchen called it "the Holy Grail of North American birding."
   
• The WW II battlefield area, as well as the U.S. Army and Navy Airfields on Attu, have been designated as National Historic Landmarks.
   
• While the island itself is uninhabited, there are still wild animals which make it home. The open country can be explored by foot; because of the changing weather patterns and rocky shoreline, kayaking and other water activities are not encouraged.
