Manager's Insight
Adventure!
The word "adventure" means different things to different people, but for me, adventure means doing something that brings me outside of my comfort zone and experiencing something completely new.
I have been lucky to be given the opportunity to step outside my comfort zone many times. When I was in school, I sailed from Poland across the Baltic in a small single mast sailboat with my classmates to visit Scandinavia. I guess that's when I first found my love of the open sea. Years later, I felt I needed a new challenge, so I set out to run at least one marathon. Well, I took to that too, because I've got four under my belt and I'm looking forward to my next race (be sure to read below about The Cruise Web's relay team!) After I got scuba certified, for my first trip, I flew to Costa Rica to dive with hammerhead sharks in Cocos Island. Not exactly diving for beginners, but I guess that's why they call it "adventure!" After reading Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air, I decided that I needed to try mountaineering. Not having a death wish, I decided that I would wait to conquer Mt. Everest, so I opted for Mount Kilimanjaro instead, with its nice achievable 19,330 feet! What a great view.
However, the greatest adventure of my life has been becoming a mother. The birth of my daughter, Sophie, has been my life's greatest challenge and greatest reward. Now, as I watch her begin to grow up, I can't wait to share my experiences with her and have some new adventures with my family.
As you approach your next adventure, I hope you'll share your stories and experiences with us. So what'll it be? Cliff diving, sky diving, exploring a cave, or just treating each day with as much enthusiasm as possible?

In keeping with our adventurous theme, this month we will be profiling Desiree Gibson. Desiree has never been one to shy away from adventure. Whether she's diving into a new role with her theater work, running in The Cruise Web's relay team during the Baltimore Marathon or horseback riding through the waves of St. Lucia, Desiree is always looking to experience something new and exciting.
Desiree came to The Cruise Web after relocating from Wisconsin and brought with her an extensive cruising knowledge from her time with Carnival Cruise Lines. She enjoys talking with people about all of the itineraries that they have sailed, as well as the places in the world they would still like to visit. "Talking with my clients about their trips is really great. It helps me gain an even better understanding of the world and its geography," explained Desiree.
Lately most of Desiree's adventures revolve around running. This year Desiree helped Team Cruise Web complete the Baltimore Marathon Team Relay, posting an impressive one-hour time for her leg of the race. This weekend Desiree will participate in the "Run for Your Lives" 5K in northern Maryland. However, none of these races pose risks like the excursion Desiree went on while in St. Lucia. "St. Lucia has the only drive-through volcano in the Caribbean. You literally drive your car directly into this volcano that could erupt at anytime."
Please check out Desiree's blog in this newsletter to find out more about Desiree's adventurous side. As far as Des' next adventure? "I've purchased a Groupon for skydiving somewhere in Virginia. It expires shortly, so we'll be jumping sometime soon."

Finding Adventure
By Desiree Gibson, Cruise Consultant.
A few weeks ago I heard a pod cast of a short story written by Neil Gaiman, featured on the This American Life's radio program. The segment was all about adventure and how adventure has different meanings to different people. For Gaiman's family, adventure meant a harrowing experience getting the daily mail. For others, adventure is defined by scaling the perils of Mt. Everest. An adventure of whatever sort is truly seen in the eye of the beholder.
The exotic warm turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, dotted with hundreds of islands, allows you to easily discover what the meaning of adventure is to you...
