Norwegian Cruise Line to Replace Single-use Plastic Bottles in 2020

Thinking about your New Year’s resolution yet? Well Norwegian Cruise Line has one set. In an effort to reduce its carbon footprint, Norwegian Cruise Line will be getting rid of all single-use plastic bottles across its entire fleet. The company will be using the resources provided by new partner JUST Goods, Inc. to replace the plastic bottles. The JUST alternative to plastic bottles is a plant-based carton which is refillable and recyclable. The replacement project is set to begin aboard Norwegian Encore and will be finished fleet-wide by January 1st 2020.

Norwegian Cruise Line and JUST Goods Inc. agree that it is important for businesses to act as leaders in making sustainable changes. The plastic initiative is the newest addition to Norwegian Cruise Line’s Sail & Sustain environmental program. This program focuses on water conservation, waste mitigation, and fuel/energy efficiency. Andy Stuart, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line, explained “It is imperative that we take meaningful steps to preserve our oceans and the destinations we visit. Partnering with JUST is one of my proudest moments as the head of our pioneering brand. This latest effort – the elimination of single-use plastic bottles across our fleet – is just the latest environmentally responsible action we are taking to reduce our footprint and encourage others to protect our natural resources. While we are aware that this is just the beginning of what we and others need to do to be good stewards of our environment, we are committed to our Sail & Sustain initiatives and will continue to innovate for the overall benefit of the planet and its future.”

Norwegian’s new partner, JUST, aims to find innovative methods of packaging and garnering water. The JUST alternative to plastic water bottles is 100 percent spring water contained in a carton made with 82 percent renewable materials. Another sustainable benefit of JUST is their single production source, allowing them to offer the most efficient shipping choice out there.
“The JUST team couldn’t be happier to now share this goal with our partner, Norwegian Cruise Line. We’re deeply appreciative of Norwegian’s commitment that’s so similar to ours – the Company is pushing the boundaries of what’s always been done because it knows we all need to do better. We’re thrilled to be taking steps in the right direction alongside NCL,” said JUST Goods, Inc. CEO Lira Laufer.
