The Olympics. The name stirs memories of sporting legends. Jim Thorpe, Jesse Owens, Carl Lewis, Mary Lou Retton, Dorothy Hamill, Michael Phelps, Dewan and Dave. Dewan and Dave? Well, yes. These two put on a sporting exhibition that will have people talking for years.
I arranged a cruise to the Caribbean for some 30 of my friends last spring (because a cruise is just that much better with friendly faces aboard). Shortly after boarding and discovering all of the games available to passengers, two of my friends decided to find out which one of them was the better athlete. Aboard the wonderful ship, these two held their own decathlon. The rules were simple, they each chose 5 events, whoever won the most was the winner.
Over the course of the next seven days these not so finely-tuned, thirty-something gentlemen set out to prove who was the best. They tested themselves at such grueling sports as ping-pong and shuffleboard. They played horse on the basketball court. They had a rock-climbing contest—what a sight, some 15 stories above the sea, two guys climbing as fast as they could. Well, one guy climbed, the other did not make it past the first step!
They held a karaoke contest and despite calls for them to both be eliminated then and there, the judges finally came to a consensus and declared a winner. On our last port of call our ship stopped at a private island. This bit of paradise proved a wonderful setting for the final two events: the beach sprint and the ocean swim.
When it was all said and done, a winner was declared. Nearly a year on, I don’t remember who won but fondly recall the joy of watching them go at it. It was worth a number of belly laughs watching these two. So, on your next voyage, pull off your flip-flops, pick a game, and go for the gold!
