MSC to Update 4 ships by the end of 2015

MSC Lirica. Photo courtesy of MSC Cruises.MSC Cruises is going to expand their four Lirica class ships, starting with the MSC Armonia in August 2014. These ships are  not only going to be reworked with new features, but they will also grow. Approximately 193 staterooms are going to be put in each ship along with 59 new crew member cabins. In total, the ships will grow from 823 feet to 902 feet.
Each of these ships will also be getting a new splash park and new shops including a perfumery. The renovations, or renaissance, as MSC is calling it, will take 38 weeks per ship and is costing the company $237 million. Gianni Onorato, CEO of MSC Cruises’ sees this undertaking as a huge investment for the company. “MSC Cruises’ ships are works of art in their own right.  With these exciting  upgrades to our fleet – already renowned for its unrivaled style and elegance – we will be even more competitive,” he said in a press conference.
Here is the schedule for each ship’s renovation:

  • MSC Armonia (built in 2001): Aug. 31 to Nov. 17, 2014
  • MSC Sinfonia (built in 2002): Jan. 12 to March 16, 2015
  • MSC Opera (built in 2004): May 2 to July 4, 2015
  • MSC Lirica (built in 2003): Aug. 21 to Nov. 9, 2015
