This past Sunday, HBO’s Game of Thrones came to a dramatic conclusion—beloved characters broke our hearts, the world’s least comfortable throne is no more, and Arya desperately needs a cruise consultant. The rocky canyons and cliffs of Iceland’s Thingvellir National Park (about 45 minutes outside of Reykjavik) helped protect the Bloody Gate while guiding the paths of several memorable characters—including Arya, Sansa, Littlefinger, Tormund and Ygritte—and this is near where Brienne battled The Hound!

Dubrovnik, Croatia
Dubrovnik’s Minceta Tower was re-imagined as Qarth’s House of the Undying, which Daenerys enters in Season Two, and much of the city was oft used for filming scenes in King’s Landing, including Cersei’s infamous walk of atonement. Shame on you if you never visit this remarkable medieval city!

Belfast, Northern Ireland
Several Northern Ireland locations and landmarks not far from Belfast have served as the beautiful, moody backdrop for various parts of Westeros, including the Kingsroad (actually the Dark Hedges), early Dragonstone (Downhill Beach), House Greyjoy’s Castle Pyke (Dunluce Castle), the Iron Islands’ docks (Ballintoy Harbour) and Winterfell Castle (Castle Ward). Plus, for one of the show’s most shocking moments, Melisandre’s “delivery room” was staged at Cushendun Caves. RIP Renly.

Valletta, Malta
Various early scenes in King’s Landing were filmed around the walled city of Mdina, and nearby Fort Manoel is where honorable Ned Stark’s story ended. Both landmarks are located less than 30 minutes from Valletta!

Seville, Spain
In the series, many kingdoms were jealous of House Martell for the beauty and climate of their make-believe home of Dorne, on display at their Water Palace and Gardens (Alcazar de Seville, in real life). Nearby, and just outside of Seville, the ruins of the Roman Amphitheatre of Italica served as the series’ legendary Dragonpit in King’s Landing.

Akureyri, Iceland
Several northern Icelandic locations near Akureyri were used throughout filming, especially for scenes depicting the rugged lands north of the Wall, including a Wildling campsite (Dimmuborgir lava fields) and the secret grotto where Jon and Ygritte got wild (Grjotagja Cave). In real life, swimming in the geothermal waters is prohibited, but this is still a worthy detour.

Sibenik, Croatia
Discover the Free City of Braavos—actually Sibenik, Croatia—and pay a visit to the Iron Bank (real life St. James Cathedral). Afterwards, continue exploring as Arya did when she found the House of Black and White, dropped her name, learned to fight with the Faceless Men and then got her name back. Honestly, as nice as Sibenik is, we’re a little surprised Arya ever left.
