Nicknamed the “Capital of the North” Akureyri is Iceland’s charming second city.

Overview
Akureyri, often hailed as the "Capital of North Iceland," is a vibrant and picturesque city situated at the head of Eyjafjörður, Iceland's longest fjord. Nestled amidst dramatic snow-capped mountains and overlooking the calm waters of the fjord, Akureyri boasts a surprisingly mild climate, thanks to its sheltered location. It serves as a vital cultural, educational, and commercial center for northern Iceland, offering a unique blend of urban charm and direct access to breathtaking natural wonders.
As a popular cruise port, Akureyri provides an excellent base for exploring some of Iceland's most iconic landscapes, including cascading waterfalls, bubbling geothermal areas, and stunning volcanic formations. The city itself is delightful, with colorful houses, charming botanical gardens, and a distinctive church that stands prominently on a hillside. A visit to Akureyri offers a memorable taste of Iceland's raw beauty, its resilient spirit, and its welcoming Nordic hospitality.
Embark on an excursion to Goðafoss, one of Iceland's most spectacular waterfalls, located approximately 30-45 minutes drive from Akureyri. Witness the powerful, horseshoe-shaped cascade, where, according to legend, pagan idols were thrown into the falls by a chieftain upon Iceland's conversion to Christianity.
Tip: Wear waterproof outer layers, as the spray from the waterfall can be significant, especially on windy days.
Venture further to the fascinating Lake Myvatn area, a region shaped by volcanic activity. Here, you can soak in the geothermal waters of the Myvatn Nature Baths, explore the pseudocraters of Skútustaðagígar, or marvel at the bizarre lava formations of Dimmuborgir.
Tip: The Myvatn area is a larger excursion (around 1-1.5 hours drive each way from Akureyri). Allocate ample time and consider a guided tour to see multiple sights.
Enjoy a peaceful walk through the Akureyri Botanical Garden, the world's northernmost botanical garden. Despite its Arctic latitude, the garden thrives with an impressive collection of over 7,000 species of plants, including many Arctic and alpine varieties, as well as foreign flora.
Tip: The garden is free to enter and offers lovely views of the city and fjord. It's a wonderful spot for a leisurely stroll and photography.
Ascend the steps to Akureyrarkirkja, Akureyri's striking Lutheran church, designed by Guðjón Samúelsson (who also designed Reykjavík's Hallgrímskirkja). Its prominent hilltop location offers commanding views over the city and Eyjafjörður.
Tip: Even if you don't go inside, the exterior architecture and the panoramic views from its vantage point are worth the visit.
Embark on a whale watching tour directly from Akureyri's harbor. Eyjafjörður is one of Iceland's best places to spot humpback whales, often seen alongside minke whales, dolphins, and porpoises, especially during the summer months.
Tip: Wear warm layers, even in summer, as it can be chilly on the water. Take motion sickness medication if you are prone to seasickness.
Wander through Akureyri's charming city center and old town. Discover colorful historic houses, browse local boutiques, visit charming cafes, and explore the small, friendly streets that characterize this northern capital.
Tip: Look for the "red hearts" traffic lights and decorations around the city, a quirky and charming local feature.
