In early May, my wife and I had the opportunity to sail on Holland America’s ms Oosterdam to Alaska. Alaska is a fantastic destination, and I could go on about it for some time. However, today I really want to focus on Holland America, which falls into the premium cruise category. If you are a regular reader of our Newsletter, you may recall last October’s issue in which Rosalind Smith, our Business Development manager, shared her summary of the various cruise lines market segments of contemporary, premium, and luxury. Rosalind wrote a fun description of the categories by using an analogy of the cruise lines to shoes. I would like to go a little more in depth on the premium cruise experience.
As the market segment name implies, premium is that one-step up in your cruise experience. On the ms Oosterdam, we were part of a Holland America event for the top agencies for Holland America (yes, our Alaskan cruise was a business trip complete with business meetings). When on such a cruise, I am always a little suspect that while trying to impress us, our experience may not be the same as the other passengers. Consequently, I participate in onboard activities with the other passengers without sharing my affiliation to the cruise industry. I use this as an opportunity to do my own market research, and I inquire about the experience of the other passengers. [Read more →]

Premium cruise ships have a refined elegance that is hard to explain. To fully get an idea of what to expect on a premium cruise, like those from Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Line and Princess Cruises, we’ve collected some photos of the dining venues, staterooms, onboard activities and service. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, so scroll down for the detailed descriptions.

We’ve all heard the fairytale where the prince and princess ride off into the sunset to live happily ever after. We’ve seen the movies where the star-crossed lovers have missed connection after missed connection only to unite in a dramatic fashion at the Empire State Building, Eiffel Tower or other international landmark. But what happens after the book ends and the credits roll?
Surely the couple might live happily ever after, but there are bumps along the way. Real world relationships are always ebbing and flowing, and Premium cruises have become the go to getaways for couples that need to reconnect with one another to leave the daily stresses behind. It’s also the perfect type of cruise for honeymooners, or any couple looking to spend quality time together. The ships provide intimate spaces and activities that can help you rekindle that romance. Here are examples of dates you and your beloved can experience aboard a premium ship. [Read more →]

Wine Spectator, which is considered one of the wine world’s top authorities and puts out a magazine of the same name, has recently included cruise lines in their annual awards for restaurant wine lists. For 2013, 10 of the 11 awards for cruise lines were awarded to Celebrity Cruises.
The awards are for 10 of Celebrity’s main dining rooms on 10 of their ships. Celebrity Cruises features an average of 400 wines on the menus of their main dining rooms. Celebrity’s wine selections are reflective of the Celebrity brand, mixing modern with classic features, and of course reflecting the regions to which their ships sail. The menus pair the wines by their flavor profiles, showcasing the wines from mild to bold. [Read more →]

To go along with our theme of contemporary cruising, I picked a casual and fun dish that you can eat with your hands and is sure to make you smile. I tried these fish tacos on a Celebrity cruise from Vancouver to San Diego and they really do represent California – they are bright, crisp and fresh. It’s like sunshine on a plate. Since that cruise, I’ve made this recipe three times, and each time I switch it up a bit to try new things. I like to stay on the spicier side of life, so I added a bit more garlic and jalapeno. However, with any recipe I recommend making it as it’s intended first, then playing around on your second go round.
To me the key to this recipe is the bright vibrant colors. Use fresh ingredients to get those stunning reds, yellows and greens. [Read more →]

A compilation by The Cruise Web employees.
2012 was filled with lots of changes in the world and the cruise industry. We saw the debuts of the Celebrity Reflection, Oceania Riviera and the Carnival Breeze, and the river cruise market continued to grow. Here at The Cruise Web, we had the opportunity to sail the seven seas this year. Below, our team members share their best cruises of 2012. Feel free to use this list as a jumping off point when you start to think of where you’ll go in 2013!
My best cruise in 2012 was by far my cruise to the Holy Land on the Crystal Serenity. Spending three days in Israel was an absolute dream come true. Floating in the Dead Sea, praying at the Wailing Wall, climbing to the top of Mount Masada and walking along the same pathways that Jesus did was a true spiritual experience. To top it off, the highlight for me was that I was baptized in the Jordan River. How awesome is that? [Read more →]

I just returned from a 3-day trip on the brand new Celebrity Reflection and I know this is a ship that I will recommend to clients and cruisers. One thing I keep coming back to about the Celebrity Reflection is how innovative it is. Celebrity is known for a very modern look with clean lines, and this was definitely present in the Reflection Suite. This beautiful two-room suite features a giant shower where passengers get an unbelievable view, because the shower is all glass and looks out over the edge of the ship. Celebrity is also known for its amazing food. I can attest – I’m not a big fan of steak, but I had a filet mignon that had my mouth watering.
For a view of all the Reflection’s innovative features, check out my slide show below featuring pictures I took on my cruise. [Read more →]
