Variety is the name of the game in the cruise industry. Cruise ships come with many different amenities, features and specialized accommodations. While each ship has its own unique features, the dozens of ships out there usually fall into one of four categories: contemporary, premium, luxury and specialty.
For most people a cruise means a lot of fun in the sun. Days are spent on beaches, lying poolside and exploring the great outdoors. But while you enjoy the outdoors and all your cruise has to offer, there are a few simple things to do to make sure you don’t come back looking like a lobster.
Having cruised on many a large cruise ship, it was with great anticipation that I looked forward to my first small ship experience this past December on Silver Sea’s Silver Spirit.
It’s funny how when you see the ship by itself, it doesn’t seem very small at all. But then you see it next to one of the larger vessels and the “small ship” label starts to make sense. However, don’t let the smaller size fool you — cruising aboard a small ship has many BIG advantages.

Cruising with young children is such a rewarding experience – one that I encourage all families to take part in. However, most anyone with kids knows that travelling with youngsters presents its own set of challenges. It’s for this reason that I’d like to share my tips for travelling with young children. What follows is a collection of handy tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way.
My daughter’s first trip was when she was seven months old and I took her to England and Portugal. Erin wouldn’t remember any of it, except she was crawling age and wanted to crawl around the plane! At this age it seems you have every child item, from a stroller to the car seat to the diaper bag full of essentials.
It’s that time of year again. The falling leaves will soon be replaced with white, cotton-soft snow. Blinking lights now playfully animate our evening drives home. Families travel long distances to be with the ones they love, even if only for a little while. But for some of us, the holidays are the best time of year for a different reason. The holidays give us yet another gift – the gift of time off, and an opportunity to get the heck out of Dodge (thank you, Santa).
For those of us ready for a break, and keeping our Travel Tips theme in mind, I offer you a few of my own “real life” cruise tips (all of these tips coming from rather humorous personal experiences). Consider this my holiday gift to you. Enjoy.
One of the best aspects of cruising is that you’ll never run out of opportunities to do something new and adventurous (unless you’ve done it all – in which case, stop bragging). By the time you are reading this newsletter, I will be cruising on the Island Princess as part of an industry event sponsored by Princess Cruises and Cunard Line. As my wife, Sara, and I began focusing on the itinerary for the cruise, we had a conversation about the scheduled formal dining evening. Much of the conversation turned nostalgic as we reminisced about how travel has changed over the years and much of that change related to attire.
