The Cruise Web’s Director of Finance and Human Resources, Don Dean, recently returned from an inaugural celebration aboard Oceania’s newest ship, Marina. The inaugural cruise departed on February 5th out of Miami and, well, why don’t we just let Don tell you himself…
“My wife and I had the privilege of being a part of Marina’s gala inauguration and preview cruise. Marina, the newest addition to Oceania’s fleet, is simply gorgeous. The wonderful woods, the marvelous marbles, and the awesome artwork along with the stunning grand staircase used to decorate Marina almost lull you into thinking that you are at a five star resort. However, the fantastic view from the staterooms’ private verandas and the comfortable 12th deck pool area with the ocean breezes remind that you are truly on a cruise ship.
The Marina experience is not limited to just what you see. The service matches the feel of the high end resort or a five star hotel. Marina, a mid-sized vessel designed for 1,250 passengers, boasts a crew of over 800. And I must continue using the adjective “five star” when talking about the dining. Master Chef Jacques Pépin sets the standard of culinary excellence for each restaurant onboard. Chef Pépin had input into the ships design as evidenced by the fact that the kitchen for each dining room is connected to the dining room. Naturally, the meal is hotter, fresher and more flavorsome when the kitchen is a few feet away from the table as opposed to being many decks away. The food, the wait staff and overall culinary experience fondly reminded us of our dining experiences when we lived in London.
The inauguration event itself was one that we will remember. The pride that Frank Del Rio, Chairman and CEO of Oceania, and all of the Oceania Staff have for Marina was palpable and contagious. Mary Hart of Entertainment Tonight was the Godmother of Marina and performed the christening by crashing a 15-liter Nebuchadnezzar of champagne against the hull. Mary could not have enjoyed her role as Godmother any more than she did. Her enthusiasm and excitement added to a great event.
Marina’s design and culinary theme is part of who she is. She features the first Bon Appétit Culinary Center, Master Chef Jacques Pépin’s first namesake restaurant at sea, Ralph Lauren Home-furnished Owner’s Suites, luxurious accommodations by Dakota Jackson, a Wine Spectator wine program and a Lalique grand stairway.
If you are looking for a premier cruise experience, I heartily recommend Marina.”
