10 Awesome Songs for Cruising

Just like a picture is worth a thousand words, so too is hearing a few notes on a keyboard. Music can bring memories, emotions and vacations right back to you. Music is everywhere when you travel. You hear the local music everywhere, whether it be the full symphonies of Mozart when on a river cruise in Austria or the island grooves of steel drum bands when you are in the Caribbean islands, and it helps set the tone for your day. A cruise ship is also filled with music, from the karaoke at night to the soothing sounds of a string quartet playing during tea time.
Here are 10 songs that come to mind when we think of our past and future cruises.
1. “Come Sail Away” by Styx
I mean the title says it all, doesn’t it? This is the perfect song to prepare for a cruise – it starts off real smooth and as your excitement builds so to does this song. So go ahead and set an open course for the virgin seas and sail away.

2. “Good Feeling” by FloRida
You might be thinking, “I know this song, but where have I heard it?” – well it was probably on one of Royal Caribbean’s commercials. They chose this song because it really makes you feel the energy of one of their cruises, which are packed with activities like ice skating, sky diving and zip lining.
As Cruise Consultant Lynda L. puts it, this song is perfect because being on a cruise is about getting those good feelings, relaxation, fun, fun, fun, dancing, exploring and meeting people, and because we have a good time.

3. “Go Outside” by The Cults
Imagine the first morning of your cruise. You wake up, rub your eyes and then spread open the curtains to find the sun is shining and you are about to dock in your first port. This song is the perfect companion to that moment. It’s also the perfect song to listen to as you stroll or ride a bike  through a sunny port with smile on your face.

4. “Stir It Up” by Bob Marley and The Wailers
If you are cruising to Jamaica, or anywhere tropical, you can’t help but escape the mellow and groovy rhythms of the legendary Bob Marley. According to The Cruise Web’s Julie A., the live bands always seem to be playing this song when you board a Caribbean cruise. It’s the moment you know you’re on a cruise vacation and you’ll want to grab a cocktail up on the pool deck.

5. “La Isla Bonita” by Madonna
Close your eyes, and listen to this song. If your hips don’t start moving, well, then you need to get on a cruise fast (via yannick at www.dresshead.com). The dreamy island beat mixed with the latin grooves makes this a great song to blast on the beach or dance to under the stars as you sail along the Greek Isles or the Canary Islands or the Azores.

6. “Kokomo” by The Beach Boys
The name “The Beach Boys” should give you a hint as to why this is a great cruising song. Cruise Web team member Ellicia A. says, “I always think that it’s my check list for cruising. Aruba, Jamaica, Bermuda, Bahamas, etc. All the places I want to go.”

7. “Cheeseburger in Paradise” by Jimmy Buffett
Like Bob Marley, Jimmy Buffett and his parrotheads are synonymous with island life. Buffett wrote this song about sailing in the Caribbean and having a cheeseburger in Tortola. You can have a cheeseburger in paradise on your cruise ship as you sail from island to island.

8. “Sea Cruise” by Frankie Ford
This is an oldie but a goodie, and it should get you rockin’. This video is also quite a treat, with a little intro by Dick Clark, so check out this high tech performance from the 1950s.

9. “Island in the Sun” by Weezer
Picture yourself lounging on the beach. The waves crashing, the sun shining and this song playing. It’s perfect, isn’t it?

10. “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong
Cruise Web Consultants Sherry J. and Gloria H. both think of this song when they think of cruising, because Crystal Cruises plays it as they leave each port. And whenever they hear it they are transported back to their Crystal Cruise in the Mediterranean.
