Vanimo, Papua New Guinea Cruise Port

If you're near Indonesia or cruising through the Bismarck Sea, you may come to the port of Vanimo, Papua New Guinea (PNG). A town of around 12,000 residents, Vanimo is the capital of the Sandaun Province in the Sepik region on PNG's north coast. While the economy tends to revolve around the logging industry with much of the local hardwood, called kwila, exported primarily to China, it’s also known for consistent waves and has been a popular surfing destination (especially from October through late April). Thanks to its proximity to Indonesia, many people travel from that country to enjoy day trips and do some shopping. In fact, Indonesia’s influence can be seen within the fabrics sold in Vanimo’s markets. In turn, some travelers also visit Jayapura, Papua, Indonesia’s largest city (about a two-hour drive). Of course, surfing is one of the most popular activities. During peak season, monsoon swells create awesome waves – some of which are best left to experienced surfers. Even though it's surfing hotspot, there aren't many facilities to rent boards just yet; if you are in need of equipment, check out the Vanimo Surf Lodge.
The small village of Lido is great for surfing, thanks to its two excellent left and right reef breaks. If surfing isn't your thing, take a stroll around Lido, which is what you might consider a typical tropical village. Its charming grass-roof huts and swaying coconut trees are a relaxing way to spend an afternoon; you can also rent bikes here.
Nature lovers will enjoy the two-hour walk around the headland. There are few amenities on this route, so make sure you have water to drink. For a different direction, the main beach near the airport leads to another headland complete with vine-covered limestone and a lovely beach.
Take a jaunt out to Narimo Island, where you can do some swimming and enjoy a picnic. You can hire a boat at the West Deco village near the main wharf on the peninsula's opposite side.
