The diverse city and cruise port of Salamanca, Spain attracts tourist and university students from all over the world, creating a culturally rich and exciting city. It lies within several hills on the Tormes River in the northwestern part of the country, only about 50 miles from Portugal. The roots of the city date back to ancient Celtic times, with its Old City area a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After the Celts, Salamanca was ruled by the Romans, Muslims, and eventually the Spanish. Today, the city is the capital of the Castile and León region, as well as the provincial capital. The 12th century University of Salamanca is Spain's oldest university and a large source of revenue for the city. Built in the traditional Spanish Baroque style, Salamanca's Plaza Mayor is a large plaza in the center of the city used as a public square and gathering area. It's also considered one of the most beautiful in Spain; this is where you can not only shop and have an ice cream, but find your way to the many other treasures that the city has to offer.
The Romanesque Old Cathedral of Salamanca was built in the 12th century and is European architecture at its more breathtaking. There's a self-guided tour with audio (in multiple languages) so you can explore at your own pace. Climb the bell tower for a magnificent view of the city.
The fantastic Casa Lis Art Nouveau and Art Deco Museum displays works by art deco period artists. The museum is housed within palace built in 1905 that features a fascinating iron façade.
Take a break from history for a spot of pure romance: Puente Romano, the bridge that crosses the river, was built in Roman times and is a fantastic spot to just stop and gaze at your surroundings. If you're in the city after dark, the lighting on the bridge makes it even lovelier.
