Port Douglas, Australia Cruise Port

Named after John Douglas, the former Premier of the state of Queensland, cruising to Port Douglas, Australia is a joy for tourists – especially snorkelers and divers. As the jumping-off point to explore the famous Great Barrier Reef, Port Douglas often doubles in size between May and September. There are multiple charters in the area that make daily trips to the outer reef and Low Isles. While earlier industry centered on mining, fishing and cutting timber near the Daintree River, the focus is now on tourism, with two popular annual festivals drawing visitors from around the globe. Along with natural wonders like the Daintree Rainforest, you'll find any number of resorts, golf courses, and restaurants. With warm temperatures all year long, little wonder that Port Douglas was third on Australian Traveller magazine's "100 Best Towns In Australia." Here are some of our favorite experiences for the cruise port of Port Douglas, Australia:

  • The Great Barrier Reef is a must. The largest reef system in the world is also one of the Seven Natural Wonders, with an astounding diversity of marine life. Along with more than 400 species of coral, you'll find dozens of species of mammals (including whales and dolphins), 1,500 species of fish, and 215 species of birds living in the surrounding islands.

  • To get close to Australia's animals without getting in a boat, visit the Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas. The facility’s aim is to keep native animals in enclosures that reflect their natural habitat; take a guide or go alone to learn about cassowaries, kangaroos, wallabies, and more.

  • The oldest living rainforest on the planet, Daintree Rainforest is a feast for the senses. The forest contains plant and animal life that can't be found anywhere else, and there are several options to explore it: by foot, by boat, or by a four wheel drive tour. The Daintree Discovery Centre provides more information about the park and its residents.

  • When it's time to relax, hit the popular Four Mile Beach. Its pristine white sands overlook a sparkling bay, and kitesurfers come out in full force during the winter months.
