The quaint-sounding cruise port of Margaret River in Western Australia is a small town south of Perth, making its home on the banks of the like-named river (about six miles inland from the Indian Ocean). An early settler was Margaret Whicher, presumably the one who inspired the river's name. The town first shows up on maps in 1839, with later Europeans filtering in and setting up logging operations. As the town grew in size, other commerce began: Margaret River is now known for its almost 140 wineries. Along with wine, the town's climate and beaches have created a perfect spot for surfing, and frequent surfing competitions are held at Margarets Main Break at the mouth of the river. There are several caves to explore in the area, and one of the most popular is Lake Cave. Considered the most "actively dripping" cave in Australia's southwest, and the only one with a permanent lake. The crystalline formations that hang from the cave ceiling are quite breathtaking.
One of most popular parks in southwestern Australia, Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park is sandwiched between two lighthouses. It contains forest areas as well as more caves to visit, with a coastline full of beaches where you can swim or partake in the famous surf. Bird lovers will enjoy the many species here, including red-eared firetail, white-breasted robin, and rock parrot.
With around 35,000 whales migrating to the warm waters here, whale watching is understandably attractive. There are any number of tours to get you up close to these majestic creatures, with prime watching months between June to August and September to December.
