Lelystad, Netherlands Cruise Port

Bordering both the lake known as Markermeer and Lake IJssel (or IJsselmeer), the bustling port city of Lelystad in the Netherlands was actually built on reclaimed land – right on top of the seabed and the shallow bay once known as Zuiderzee. As the provincial capital of Flevoland, the Dutch-infused Lelystad is a combination of nature and modern-day attractions, and boasts plenty of tourist attractions. It’s especially fascinating to those interested in naval history, as this is an area where multiple shipwrecks have taken place over the years. In direct contrast to sinking ships is the retail paradise near the wharf; the Batavia Stad Fashion Outlet is designed to help travelers get a magnificent bargain, even if you do nothing else in Lelystad (it also resembles a seaside village, keeping with the maritime feel of the city). Listed below are a handful of our favorite experiences when cruising to Lelystad, Netherlands:

  • The National Centre for Maritime History and Bataviawerf is where you'll find a replica of the 17th-century ship called Batavia, a Dutch merchant frigate that took 10 years to build. A huge ship that was supposedly unsinkable, it of course did – and on its first voyage out in 1629 (the replica has fared much better).

  • Holland’s famous nature park called Oostvaardersplassen is found between Lelystad and Almere. Divided into wet and dry areas, this ecologically-rich preserve is home to many types of birds (including cormorants, spoonbills, and white herons) along with land animals, such as Konik ponies, red deer, and Heck cattle.

  • The Nationaal Luchtvaart-Themapark Aviodrome (or Aviodrome, for short) is for fans of all things that fly. Here you'll find a large collection of aircraft on display, along with a restaurant and cinema. There are also several items in the "Space Collection," including the Astronomical Netherlands Satellite.

  • Fans of modern architecture will enjoy the ground of gleaming buildings called Zilverparkkade; each building, although designed to work together, was designed by a different architect and creates a fascinating postmodern facade. The colorful Agora Theatre, on the other hand, is a cheerful, completely 21st century structure both from outside and indoors.
