Kumai, Kalimantan, Borneo Cruise Port

Animal, nature, and adventure lovers will find that cruising to Kumai, Borneo is a once-in-a-lifetime enterprise. Located in the Central Kalimantan province in Indonesia near the Java Sea, the city was once part of the Kutaringin Monarchy. Many old cultural traditions still remain, such as a form of poetry called Tirik and a dance called Japin. With many of the population working as fishermen, a festival called the Beberish Benua (or "cleaning continent") is held by local fishermen each year. The indoor and outdoor markets are excellent places to browse for souvenirs, without getting pressured into buying. With one of the major activities in Kumai involving visiting the orangutans in their native rainforests after traveling the Kumai River (in a wooden boat called a klotok), you know this will be a trip like no other. Here some of our favorite experiences for the cruise port of Kumai, Kalimantan, Borneo:

  • Possibly the most popular attractions in the area is the Tanjung Puting National Park. Famous for orangutan conservation, it came to international attention through primatologist Biruté Galdikas, who was trained by archaeologist Louis Leakey. Along with the orangutans, you'll also see the proboscis monkeys, which can only be found on Borneo. Fauna lovers will also enjoy the more than 200 varieties of wild orchids that can be found during this fantastic excursion.

  • The beautiful Patih Mambang Waterfall flows from the Keraya hills into the sea; tourists find it a great area for swimming, diving, and fishing.

  • Known for pristine white sands, the Sei. Cabang Beach is a lovely place for a rest. It's also a conservation area for green turtles as established by the Friends of the National Parks Foundation (FNPF).

  • For a little bit of history, visit the George A. Winke mausoleum. Captain Winke was a Dutch solider whose actual contributions seem to be lost in the winds of time; he's buried in the Sei. Kapitan countryside, which apparently got its name from his rank.
