Khushbagh, India Cruise Port

Cruising down the west bank of the Bhagirathi River, you'll come to a port in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal which features Khushbagh (also called Khoshbagh or Khosh Bagh) in India, the garden cemetery of the family of the Nawabs of Bengal. The Nawabs ruled what was Bengal, Bihar and Orissa between 1717 and 1765. The Khushbagh, or "Garden of Happiness," is said to be the final resting place of the first Nawab of Bengal, Nawab Alivardi Khan; also entombed here are Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah and his wife, along with various other notables. The cemetery is built on almost eight acres of land with the surrounding walls over 2,700 feet long; more than 100 varieties of rose bushes decorate the grounds and fill it with a glorious fragrance when in bloom. Don't miss a visit to the tomb of Siraj ud-Daulah, the last independent Nawab of Bengal. With the end of his rule came the beginning of the British East India Company ruling Bengal and eventually taking over almost all of South Asia. His tomb is marked with a simple, elegant single-story mausoleum.
There's also a mosque here that was built by Nawab Alivardi Khan, mirroring that of the Jama Masjid (main mosque) of Delhi. It was built on a plinth, or heavy stone base, of 2,675 square feet.
While Siraj ud-Daulah and Alivardi Khan are both entombed within a square, flat-roofed mausoleum, the graves of the other family members are largely unmarked.
