Honiara, Soloman Island Cruise Port

Honiara is the capital of the Solomon Islands and is situated on the island of Guadalcanal. Guadalcanal is most recognized as the site of a major battle between the U.S. and Japanese. Honiara was the former location of an airfield the U.S. used to keep Japanese ships away. When you visit you can tour many of the battle sites to get an idea of the struggle both sides went through. The city is now the center of government and is independent from any former ruling nations, like Britain, which ruled until 1978. Listed below are some of our favorite sights and sounds for when you cruise to Honiara in the Solomon Islands:

• Honiara is a diver’s dream, so you should SCUBA if you can. The beautiful blue waters that surround Guadalcanal are filled with stunning fish and seascapes.
   
• Take a walking tour of the WWII battle sites where you will get a good insight into the strife this island went through.
   
• The Honiara National Museum & Cultural Centre is filled with artifacts and exhibits that explain the history of the islands from before any European set foot.
   
• For more insight into the battles of WWII you can visit the Vilu War Museum which contains artifacts discovered in 1970 by the locals in the island’s jungles.
